PART 3

Caleb did not explain things the way adults wanted.

He explained them the way he saw them.

Cleanly.

Precisely.

Without decoration.

Olivia sat beside him at the kitchen table while the divorce file lay open between them.

“What do you mean, one number is pretending?”

Caleb pointed to the first contract page.

“This one is real.”

Then he pointed to the exhibit attached behind it.

“This one is wearing its clothes.”

Olivia frowned.

“Show me.”

Caleb tapped the digits one by one.

“Eight.”

“Four.”

“Seven.”

“Two.”

“B.”

Then he flipped pages with careful fingers.

“Here it becomes D.”

Olivia leaned closer.

At first, she thought it was a typo.

Then she saw the company name.

West Meridian Development.

Then a subsidiary.

Then a shell vendor listed under a different acquisition date.

Her stomach tightened.

She had spent enough years in litigation to know that typos usually did not carry wire transfer schedules.

She photographed every page.

Then she called Mara Ellis, the only attorney she still trusted.

Mara arrived after midnight with no makeup and a laptop bag.

Caleb sat on the couch under a weighted blanket, pretending not to listen.

Mara reviewed the pages.

Her face changed.

“Olivia.”

“What?”

“This is not just divorce.”

She turned the laptop toward Olivia.

“The contract number on page twelve belongs to a failed Nevada casino acquisition.”

“Nathan’s company reported the loss three years ago.”

Olivia felt cold.

“So why is it in my divorce file?”

Mara looked toward the living room where Caleb sat very still.

“Because someone reused the old contract shell to move money.”

“How much?”

Mara scanned the schedule.

“At least four hundred million.”

Olivia gripped the edge of the table.

Nathan had not offered her two hundred fifty million because he felt guilty.

He offered it because if she signed, the attached waivers would bury any claim to review marital financial records.

He was buying her silence with money stolen from somewhere else.

Caleb appeared in the doorway.

His voice was small.

“Did I do something wrong?”

Olivia went to him immediately.

“No, baby.”

“You did something very brave.”

He looked at the papers.

“Dad will be mad.”

Olivia held his face gently.

“Then let him be mad at me.”

Caleb shook his head.

May you like

“He is already mad at us.”
