PART 7

Nathan was arrested at his own shareholders’ meeting.

That was not Olivia’s choice.

It was the government’s.

Still, she understood the poetry.

Nathan had built his image on stages.

Quarterly calls.

Ribbon cuttings.

Luxury hotel openings.

Investor summits where he spoke about trust while stealing from the people applauding him.

The agents waited until he stepped behind the podium.

His face appeared on two giant screens.

He began with his favorite sentence.

“Ladies and gentlemen, confidence is the foundation of value.”

Then the side doors opened.

The room stirred.

Nathan stopped speaking.

Agent Brooks walked down the center aisle.

“Nathan West, you are under arrest.”

Cameras flashed before the board could block them.

Nathan tried to smile.

“Is this necessary?”

Agent Brooks answered, “Yes.”

That clip played everywhere by dinner.

Olivia did not show Caleb.

He saw it anyway at school when a classmate shoved a tablet in his face.

Your dad got arrested.

Caleb came home silent.

Too silent.

Olivia found him in his closet with the lights off.

She sat outside the door.

“I am here.”

No answer.

She waited.

After a long time, he whispered, “Everyone knows.”

Olivia leaned against the wall.

“Yes.”

“Do they know what he called me?”

Her throat tightened.

“Some people do.”

A pause.

“Do they believe him?”

Olivia closed her eyes.

“No.”

The closet door opened a crack.

Caleb’s eyes were red.

“What if the judge does?”

Olivia reached out slowly.

“The judge will hear what you saw.”

“You do not have to be loud to be truthful.”

Caleb thought about that.

Then crawled into her lap even though he was getting too big for it.

Mara filed a motion the next morning to protect Caleb’s identity in public proceedings.

The judge granted part of it.

Not all.

The contract observation was central evidence.

Caleb might have to testify in a closed session.

Olivia wanted to refuse.

Caleb surprised her.

“I can say the numbers.”

She shook her head.

“You do not have to.”

He looked at her.

“Dad said I do not matter.”

His voice was small but steady.

“I want to matter correctly.”
