PART 5
Nathan tried to laugh when the agents entered.
It was a good laugh.
Clean.
Controlled.
Practiced in boardrooms and interviews.
Then one agent lifted a sealed warrant.
The laugh died halfway through.
“This is a private marital matter,” Nathan said.
Agent Brooks looked at the cash scattered across the marble.
“Not anymore.”
Vanessa stepped behind Nathan.
Her confidence was no longer beautiful.
It was nervous.
Mara stood beside Olivia.
“Do not speak to him.”
Nathan pointed at her.
“You are violating privilege.”
Mara smiled without warmth.
“Your divorce settlement attached corporate exhibits used to obtain a fraudulent waiver.”
“You waived privacy when you turned your wife into a disposal site for evidence.”
Caleb leaned against Olivia’s leg.
Agent Brooks crouched slightly, not too close.
“You are Caleb?”
Caleb nodded.
“I hear you noticed something important.”
Caleb looked at Olivia first.
She nodded.
He whispered, “The B and D are different contracts.”
The agent did not smile like adults sometimes did when children said serious things.
He treated Caleb like a witness.
“That helped.”
Nathan snapped, “He is seven.”
Agent Brooks stood.
“And apparently more careful than your compliance department.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
Mara handed over copied documents.
“The original file is preserved.”
“The metadata shows the substitution happened yesterday.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
Olivia looked at him.
“You put fraudulent documents into my divorce file.”
“You wanted me to sign away the right to inspect them.”
Nathan’s voice turned cold.
“You will regret this.”
Caleb flinched.
Olivia bent down and whispered, “Eyes on me.”
Caleb did.
His breathing slowed.
Agent Brooks signaled another officer.
“Mr. West, phones on the table.”
Nathan did not move.
The second agent stepped forward.
“Now.”
Vanessa placed hers down immediately.
Nathan looked at her in betrayal.
She whispered, “I am not going to prison for your paperwork.”
That sentence cracked the room open.
Nathan turned on her.
“You knew enough.”
Vanessa’s face drained.
Olivia heard it.
So did the agents.
So did the recording device Mara had already disclosed.

Nathan realized too late that rage had made him generous with truth.
