PART 4
Nathan knew Olivia had hesitated.
That was why he came to the mansion himself.
Not to negotiate.
To perform victory.
The Beverly Hills house had been theirs once, though Olivia never loved it.
Too much marble.
Too many rooms designed to impress people who did not stay.
Nathan loved it because every echo sounded expensive.
Vanessa arrived with him wearing burgundy and confidence.
Olivia came because Mara told her to appear cooperative while the forensic team quietly copied records through legal channels.
Caleb came because he refused to let Olivia go alone.
Nathan hated that.
He hated Caleb’s silence most when it felt like judgment.
The cash was theatre.
Nathan had it stacked in metal cases and tossed bundles across the floor after Olivia refused to sign.
“Look at it,” he shouted.
“You will never earn this in ten lifetimes.”
Olivia said nothing.
Vanessa smiled.
“She should be grateful.”
Nathan pointed at Caleb.
“And take that burden with you.”
That was the moment Olivia almost forgot the plan.
Almost.
She saw Caleb’s face fold inward.
Saw his small fingers grip her sleeve.
Saw the word burden enter him like a bruise.
Then Caleb looked at the open folder on the coffee table.
Not at the cash.
The folder.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
That was the look Olivia knew.
The look he wore when a puzzle piece did not match.
“Page twelve has the wrong contract number,” he said.
Nathan froze.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But Olivia saw it.
Mara had told her to watch for the first silence.
Fraud does not fear accusation.
It fears accuracy.
Vanessa turned to Nathan.
“Nathan… why does he know that?”
Olivia answered before he could.
“Because he found the fraud you tried to hide.”
Nathan stepped toward her.
“You have no idea what you are talking about.”
Caleb whispered, “The dates are wrong too.”
Nathan’s face twisted.
Olivia placed herself in front of Caleb.
“Do not look at him.”
“Look at me.”
Nathan’s voice dropped.
“If you repeat any of this, I will bury you.”
Olivia lifted her phone.
“You already tried.”
The front doors opened behind her.
Mara entered with two federal agents.
Nathan turned slowly.
May you like
And for the first time in his life, money on the floor could not buy the room back.
