Chapter 10

No arrests happened at the cemetery.
No political consequences unfolded in front of the mourners.
No one lost an office.
No money changed hands.
No final family fate was decided beside Grace Cross’s coffin.
The photographers kept recording.
The mourners stood frozen around the open grave.
Victoria Hale remained in her white fur coat, one hand pressed to her chest, her face no longer angry but frightened.
Senator Adrian Hale stood behind her, pale and silent.
Elena Cross stood beside her mother’s coffin with blood at the corner of her lip, one hand resting over her pregnant belly and the other holding the sealed DNA vial that proved her baby belonged to the husband she had buried months earlier.
Margaret Shaw opened the black evidence case just enough to show the sealed laboratory packet.
Then she faced Adrian and Victoria.
Her voice was steady.
“The DNA report confirms Elena is Adrian Hale’s sister.”
The words did not echo.
They landed.
Adrian’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
Victoria looked from Elena to Adrian, then back to the sealed evidence, as if the entire cemetery had shifted beneath her feet.
Several reporters turned their cameras away from Elena and toward the senator.
Elena did not smile.
This was not victory.
Her mother was still dead.
Her lip still stung.
Her child had still been dragged into a lie in front of strangers.
But the accusation had changed shape forever.
She was not Adrian Hale’s mistress.
She was his hidden blood.
Adrian stared at her with recognition and dread.

Elena stood still beside Grace Cross’s coffin, suddenly understanding that her mother’s final secret had not been buried with her.
It had been waiting for this exact moment to rise.
