Chapter 6

Margaret Shaw had spent thirty-five years protecting documents from powerful families.

She understood the difference between secrets and evidence.

Secrets depend on silence.

Evidence survives noise.

Grace Cross came to her office six months before she died carrying a sealed envelope, three old photographs, and a request that made Margaret remove her glasses.

“If anything happens before I tell Elena, you tell her only what the documents can prove.”

Margaret asked, “What are you afraid of?”

Grace looked out the window.

“The Hales do not forgive inconvenient blood.”

That sentence stayed with Margaret.

She began the process quietly.

Laboratory chain of custody.

Sealed packets.

Independent witnesses.

No labels visible to casual eyes.

No unnecessary disclosure.

No early release to anyone who might bury the result before Elena saw it.

Adrian’s sample had been obtained under strict conditions.

Elena’s through estate authorization connected to Grace’s final documents.

The report was sealed the morning of the funeral.

Margaret planned to meet Elena privately after the burial.

Then her assistant called from the cemetery entrance.

“Mrs. Hale is here with press.”

Margaret grabbed the evidence case and moved faster than she had in years.

By the time she reached the grave path, Victoria’s hand had already struck Elena’s face.

Photographers were surrounding the moment like wolves around an opening.

Margaret stopped only long enough to breathe.

The wrong evidence revealed too soon can destroy the person it is meant to protect.

But Victoria had already made Elena the story.

So Margaret walked forward.

Locked case in one hand.

Sealed cream folder in the other.
