Chapter 9

Adrian’s world narrowed to the sealed packet.

He could hear cameras.

Whispers.

Victoria’s uneven breathing.

The wind moving through white funeral flowers.

But all he saw was Margaret’s hand resting on the evidence case.

His father had been dead for twelve years.

Yet somehow the old man still controlled the air around them.

Adrian remembered the family rules.

Never discuss the woman from Virginia.

Never ask why his mother burned letters.

Never question why certain staff disappeared from campaign history.

Never speak Grace Cross’s name after the summer of 1992.

As a young man, he obeyed because obedience was easier than losing inheritance, approval, and identity.

As a senator, he avoided because public life punishes old private rot when it finally surfaces.

Now the hidden consequence stood in front of him.

Pregnant.

Grieving.

Blood at her lip.

His sister, if the report said what Margaret’s eyes already did.

Elena stared at him.

Not pleading.

Not accusing him of what Victoria accused.

Something worse.

Waiting for him to become honest.

He wanted to say he did not know.

He wanted to say he had only learned recently.

He wanted to say their father had built the lie before either of them could choose.

But he said nothing.

Because Margaret had not spoken yet.

And the report, not his fear, would decide the first truth.

Victoria whispered, “Adrian?”

He looked at her.

The anger in her face had collapsed into terror.

For once, she was not afraid he had been unfaithful.

She was afraid she had publicly attacked the wrong woman for the wrong secret.

Margaret lifted the sealed folder.

Elena held the DNA vial.

The coffin waited behind them.
