Chapter 3

Victoria Hale knew how to perform pain.

She had been a senator’s wife for sixteen years.

She could cry without smearing makeup.

Smile beside donors she despised.

Stand beside Adrian during speeches about family values while privately counting every woman who smiled at him too long.

She did not trust silence.

She did not trust beauty.

And she especially did not trust a pregnant woman appearing near her husband at a private cemetery.

Someone had sent her a photograph.

Elena leaving a legal office.

Adrian entering the same building an hour later.

Another image of Elena near a black sedan connected to Hale staff.

A note with one sentence.

Ask him whose child she is carrying.

Victoria did not verify it.

She did not wait.

Fear mixed with pride until it became certainty.

By the time she reached the cemetery, she had already convicted Elena in her mind.

A younger woman.

Pregnant.

Connected somehow to Adrian.

At Grace Cross’s funeral.

It was enough for a woman already terrified her marriage had become a public lie.

So Victoria walked past mourners, ignored Adrian calling her name, and slapped Elena in front of the open grave.

“You’re carrying my husband’s child!”

The cameras caught everything.

That was partly why Victoria did it.

A public accusation forces an answer.

A public shame cannot be hidden.

But the moment Elena turned back, Victoria felt the first wrong note.

There was no panic in Elena’s eyes.

No guilt.

No pleading.

Only grief.

And something colder.

Control.

“Tell her the truth, Adrian.”

Victoria looked at her husband then.

Adrian did not look like a man caught in an affair.

May you like

He looked like a man standing at the edge of a room he had avoided entering his entire life.
