Chapter 8

Victoria tried one final time to stop the room.
“Do not open that.”
Her voice was lower now.
Less rage.
More fear.
Margaret did not look at her.
“This evidence was preserved under Grace Cross’s estate instructions.”
Adrian closed his eyes briefly at Grace’s name.
Victoria noticed.
“You knew?”
He did not answer.
That silence wounded her more than any confession.
Elena looked at him then, really looked at him.
She saw not a lover.
Not an enemy.
A man whose face carried pieces of questions she had inherited without knowing it.
The shape of his eyes.
The tension in his mouth.
The way he stared at the evidence case like a son afraid of his father’s sins returning through paper and blood.
Elena’s hand moved to her belly.
The baby shifted faintly.
Michael’s baby.
Her child.
Not Adrian’s.
Never Adrian’s.
But the Hale family had reached her anyway.
Through Grace.
Through buried history.
Through a sealed report carried across cemetery grass.
Margaret opened the case just enough to reveal the laboratory packet.
No text visible.
No details exposed.
Only the fact of preservation.
A reporter whispered, “DNA?”
Another camera shifted from Elena to Adrian.
Victoria’s face tightened.
“Margaret, this is not the place.”
Margaret finally looked at her.
“You made this the place.”
The sentence silenced even the photographers for half a second.
Elena straightened beside her mother’s coffin.
She did not know what would come after this.
But she knew one thing.
May you like
Her mother had not died leaving her defenseless.
