Chapter 24 - THE FIRST HOUR WITHOUT ME

Mother’s first community visit was at a botanical garden.

I sat in café across path.

Not following.

Not hovering.

Approved supervisor Meredith walked nearby but gave space.

Lowri carried her repaired album? Too bulky. She carried one photo of Carys maybe.

Mother did not ask her to leave it.

Good.

They looked at butterflies.

Bought lemonade.

Then Lowri fell.

Scraped knee.

I saw from distance.

My body moved.

Then stopped.

Mother crouched.

Asked:

“Do you want me to help?”

Lowri nodded.

Mother cleaned with water and tissue.

Meredith nearby.

No crisis.

No grabbing.

No taking control.

Then Lowri cried.

“Mommy used to kiss.”

Mother paused.

This was the test.

She said:

“I remember.”

Then:

“Do you want me to kiss it or should we call Daddy?”

Lowri thought.

“You.”

Mother kissed knee.

No replacement.

Consent.

Different.

I sat back.

That small interaction mattered more than months of legal documents.

Then visit ended on time.

Mother did not ask for more.

She brought Lowri to me.

“Her knee is scraped.”

“I saw.”

Lowri said:

“Grandma did okay.”

Mother almost laughed.

“High praise.”

Then Lowri asked:

“Next week?”

Mother looked at me.

I said:

“We’ll follow schedule.”

No child deciding calendar alone.

No grandmother entitlement.

May you like

Structure.

Good.
