Chapter 6 - THE ENVELOPE MOTHER RECEIVED

Jonathan Bell had courier records.

Three weeks after Carys died, his office sent a sealed estate packet.

Recipient:

Alwyn Mercer.

Care of:

Honora Mercer.

Why care of Mother?

Because I was staying with Lowri at my sister’s home temporarily and Mother was collecting mail.

Again.

Convenience.

The courier obtained signature.

Honora Mercer.

I never saw the packet.

Contents list:

Copy of revised will.

Letter to Alwyn.

Emergency guardianship nomination.

Caregiver restriction memorandum.

Counselor contact information.

Personal effects schedule.

I had seen the will later through probate.

Not the rest.

“How?”

Jonathan explained:

A duplicate will was filed properly.

The other papers were personal directives not all probate filings.

He assumed Mother forwarded.

She did not.

Could she claim forgot?

Maybe.

Then he located digital copies.

Naomi insisted we preserve chain and compare.

No instant accusation.

The caregiver restriction memorandum was three pages.

I almost opened.

Naomi stopped me.

“This is probably central. Before you read, understand it may contain allegations not adjudicated facts.”

Good.

I read.

Carys wrote:

I do not consent to Honora Mercer serving as Lowri’s primary or unsupervised caregiver if I die while Lowri is still young, unless Alwyn independently determines circumstances have materially changed after reviewing the attached incidents.

There.

Not:

never let her near Lowri forever.

More careful.

Then incidents.

Unauthorized discussions of Carys’s death.

Attempts to position Thomasin as replacement maternal figure.

Ignoring parental restrictions around pickup.

Removing Carys’s photographs from Lowri’s room during one overnight stay.

That one I had not known.

Then:

Repeated statements suggesting Lowri’s attachment to Carys would become unhealthy after death.

Then a final incident.

Honora had taken Lowri, age three, to Thomasin’s home for an overnight stay after Carys explicitly refused.

Wait.

Could Mother have taken without permission?

Need cause.

Carys hospitalized overnight unexpectedly. I was at hospital. Mother offered to keep Lowri at her home. Instead she took Lowri to Thomasin's and told me next day. I thought no big deal. Carys was furious.

Carys wrote:

Lowri returned calling Thomasin “practice Mommy.”

My chest tightened.

Then:

When confronted, Honora said children adapt faster if adults do not preserve impossible loyalties.

There.

That phrase.

Mother’s worldview.

Then Carys’s conclusion:

I do not believe Honora intends physical harm. I believe she will use access to Lowri to reshape her memories and attachments according to what Honora considers best for the family.

There.

Central theme.

Still Ch6, not Ch10. We need delay confirmation until Ch10. We must not fully reveal. Oops. We can treat this as allegations, not confirmed. But user asked Ch10 central secret. We can have Ch6 show partial memo but redact/uncertain? Maybe better in final keep this but say attachment incidents missing? Hmm too much. We already have emotional truth. Need central secret could be a different stronger confirmed mechanism: perhaps Mother not only erased memory but had concealed a legal guardianship attempt or psychologist manipulation. Need Ch10 confirm that. So Ch6 can show Carys feared memory reshaping, but not final hidden act. The warning "Don't let her near Lowri" already explained emotionally though. Need central secret still unconfirmed: whether Mother actually acted after Carys's death to create replacement plan and hide documents. The core could be Mother and Thomasin intentionally coordinated the engagement and memory erasure after death. Ch10 can confirm via records that Mother had secretly contacted a family therapist and lawyer to establish Thomasin as "maternal continuity figure" and tried to get Alwyn to sign a school/emergency caregiver designation disguised in family papers. But maybe too contrived.

Let's revise path: At end of Carys memo, there is reference to "Incident 7 — see sealed attachment; do not leave Lowri alone with Honora until Alwyn reads it." That attachment is missing from packet. The photographed warning points to Mother. Need find sealed attachment by Ch10. Great.

Continue.

The memorandum ended with:

For the incident on March 6, see sealed Attachment Seven. I do not want this summarized because context matters.

Attachment Seven was not in Jonathan’s digital copy.

“Why?”

He frowned.

“It was physical material Carys gave me separately.”

“What material?”

“A recording and signed statement from a third party.”

“Where is it?”

“It should have been in the sealed packet.”

The packet Mother received.

The packet I never saw.

Now the central secret had a name.

May you like

Attachment Seven.

And Mother had been the last documented person to receive it.
