part 3

PART 3
After the accident, Bradley became the grieving cousin everyone admired.
He stood in front of cameras outside the hospital.
His dark suit perfect.
His voice controlled.
His eyes just wet enough.
“My family asks for privacy while Christopher fights for his life.”
Madeline watched the interview from the hospital waiting room and felt something in her stomach turn.
Bradley said family like a man locking a door.
Christopher’s doctors said coma.
Severe trauma.
Uncertain prognosis.
Long-term neurological monitoring.
Bradley said hope.
But every action after that made Madeline think he meant delay.
He restricted visitors.
Then restricted updates.
Then told security Madeline was not approved.
She pushed.
He smiled.
“Christopher’s condition is too delicate for emotional disruptions.”
Madeline said, “I am not a disruption.”
Bradley leaned closer.
“To this family, you are.”
For months, she fought to see Christopher.
Attorneys blocked her.
Assistants ignored her.
The hospital claimed privacy regulations.
The board gave polite condolences.
Then one night, an old attorney named Elliot Harlan called her.
His voice was low.
“Miss Royce, Christopher signed a private directive before the accident.”
Madeline sat up in bed.
“What directive?”
“If he became medically incapacitated during the investigation, he requested that certain documents be released to you.”
“Why me?”
“Because he believed you were the only person Bradley had not bought.”
The next morning, Madeline met Elliot in a private office.
He showed her the directive.
Christopher’s signature.
Dated three days before the crash.
A sealed instruction.
If I am alive but unable to speak, and if Bradley controls access to me, Madeline Royce is to receive my investigative file.
Madeline’s hands shook.
Elliot then showed her the second document.
A marriage license application.
Already signed by Christopher.
Madeline stared at it.
“No.”
Elliot looked tired.
“He prepared this as a legal safeguard.”
“That is insane.”
“It is extreme.”
“It gives you spousal standing to challenge Bradley’s control, access his medical team, and protect his shares if his condition is being manipulated.”
Madeline pushed the paper away.
“I never agreed to marry a man in a coma.”
“I know.”
Elliot’s voice softened.
“And if you say no, I will never mention this again.”
Madeline looked at Christopher’s signature.
Then at the photo Elliot placed beside it.
Christopher in his hospital bed.
Pale.
Silent.
Unprotected.
She whispered, “Bradley caused the accident, didn’t he?”
Elliot did not answer.
May you like
He did not have to.
