PART 8

Bradley reached Mara’s apartment before Elliot’s investigator did.

That was his mistake.

He thought speed still belonged to him.

He did not know Madeline had called the police the moment she saw him leave the hospital.

Not because she had proof enough.

Because Christopher had taught her that powerful men count on everyone waiting for perfect proof while they destroy available evidence.

Mara Ellis lived in a small second-floor apartment above a bakery in Hoboken.

She opened the door with a chain still latched.

Bradley stood outside smiling.

“Mara.”

She tried to close the door.

He placed one hand against it.

“I paid you to stay quiet.”

Her voice trembled.

“I did.”

“No.”

“You hid something.”

Inside the apartment, her old phone was already sealed in a freezer bag beneath a loose kitchen tile.

Mara had lived with fear for nine months.

Fear makes people careful.

Bradley’s voice softened.

“You do not want to be part of this.”

Mara whispered, “You caused that accident.”

Bradley’s smile vanished.

“And you signed an agreement.”

Sirens sounded below.

Mara looked past him.

So did Bradley.

Police lights flashed against the stairwell window.

For once, he had arrived just too late.

Officers came up the stairs with Elliot’s investigator behind them.

Bradley stepped back smoothly.

“This woman has been harassing my family.”

Mara opened the door fully.

Her face was pale, but her voice worked.

“I have video.”

The officers looked at Bradley.

His expression did not change.

That was almost impressive.

But not enough.

At the hospital, Madeline received the call while standing beside Christopher’s bed.

“They have her,” Elliot said.

“And the phone.”

Madeline closed her eyes.

Christopher watched her.

“Safe?” he whispered.

“Yes.”

His hand relaxed.

The video arrived in police custody two hours later.

Not to Madeline directly.

To investigators.

Elliot summarized only what he could.

Bradley entering the restricted garage.

A mechanic’s access panel open near Christopher’s car.

Bradley speaking to someone off-camera.

Brake line.

Storm cover.

Board vote.

Then Christopher’s voice from the watch, recorded inside the car before the crash, weak but clear.

Bradley, what did you do?

Madeline covered her mouth.

Christopher closed his eyes.

May you like

The truth had finally found sound.
