PART 5
Bradley did not move from the doorway.
He was too intelligent to lunge in front of witnesses.
Too arrogant to leave.
The monitor beeped beside Christopher.
Madeline stood between the bed and the man Christopher had named.
“Get the doctor,” she said.
Bradley smiled thinly.
“You are not in charge here.”
Elliot’s voice came from behind him.
“Actually, she is.”
Bradley turned.
Elliot Harlan stood in the hall with two hospital administrators and a security officer.
He held a thick legal folder.
“Madeline Vale is now Christopher’s legal spouse and designated medical proxy under his prior directive.”
Bradley’s jaw tightened.
“That directive is contested.”
“Not yet.”
Elliot stepped into the room.
“And not by you while emergency review is active.”
Madeline leaned toward Christopher.
“Christopher, can you hear me?”
His eyes shifted toward her.
His lips moved.
“Recorder.”
Madeline frowned.
“What?”
He struggled.
“My watch.”
Bradley’s face changed.
That was enough.
Madeline looked at Christopher’s left wrist.
A luxury watch sat loose against his pale skin.
She remembered it.
Christopher wore it the night he brought files to her apartment.
He had joked that it recorded voice memos better than he remembered meetings.
Bradley stepped forward.
“Do not touch him.”
Security moved between them.
Madeline carefully removed the watch.
Christopher’s fingers brushed hers.
Weak.
Urgent.
Elliot took one look and pulled out an evidence pouch.
Bradley laughed.
“This is absurd.”
Madeline looked at him.
“He said you caused the accident.”
“He is brain-injured.”
Christopher’s eyes sharpened.
“Not enough.”
The room went silent.
Even Elliot stopped moving.
Bradley’s face drained.
Christopher looked at Madeline.
His voice was fractured, barely audible.
“Garage.”
“Brake line.”
“Bradley watched.”
Madeline felt the world narrow.
The accident had not been rain.
Not chance.
Not tragedy.
Bradley’s voice became cold.
“You should be careful, Madeline.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because you just married into a war.”
Madeline held up the watch.
“No, Bradley.”
May you like
“You just let me into the evidence room.”
