PART 6
Bradley called the watch personal property.
Elliot called it evidence.
Madeline called hospital security.
That was the first time Bradley truly lost control.
Not loudly.
No shouting yet.
His face simply went still, as if every polite expression had been removed from him.
“You are making a mistake,” he said.
Madeline did not answer.
She handed the watch to Elliot.
Elliot sealed it in the pouch and signed across the label.
The administrator called an independent neurologist.
The security officer called the hospital’s legal department.
A nurse quietly moved Christopher’s chart away from Bradley’s reach.
Small movements.
Huge shift.
Power leaving one set of hands and entering another.
Christopher watched through half-open eyes.
Every few seconds, his face tightened in pain.
Madeline returned to his side.
“Do you need me to stop?”
His fingers moved toward hers.
“No.”
His voice was almost gone.
“Find Mara.”
Madeline frowned.
“Who is Mara?”
Christopher’s eyes flicked toward Bradley.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For someone else.
“Mara Ellis.”
“Night nurse.”
Bradley’s hand curled into a fist.
Elliot noticed.
Madeline did too.
Christopher whispered, “She saw him.”
Bradley stepped backward.
“I am not listening to this.”
Elliot blocked the doorway.
“You may wait outside.”
Bradley’s smile returned.
Wrong.
Dangerous.
“I will wait wherever I please.”
Madeline turned to the security officer.
“He is not authorized to be in this room.”
The officer hesitated.
Bradley looked at him with familiar entitlement.
Then Elliot lifted the proxy document.
The officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Vale, please leave the room.”
For a moment, Bradley looked like he might refuse.
Then he looked at Christopher.
A sleeping man was easy to control.
An awake one with a wife, a lawyer, and evidence was not.
Bradley stepped into the hall.
Before leaving, he looked at Madeline.
“You think he married you because he trusted you?”
Madeline’s chest tightened.
Bradley leaned closer.
“He married you because you were useful.”
Christopher tried to speak.
Madeline squeezed his hand gently.
She looked at Bradley.
“Useful is still better than guilty.”
Bradley’s eyes hardened.
May you like
Then the door closed between them.
