Mara Ellis had disappeared three weeks after the accident.
That was what the hospital told Madeline first.
Not missing.
Resigned.
Moved.
Unavailable.
Every word sounded chosen by someone afraid of the correct one.
Elliot sent investigators immediately.
Madeline stayed beside Christopher while the neurologist examined him.
The doctor’s findings made the room colder.
Christopher had not been fully unreachable for months.
His responses had been minimal, inconsistent, but present.
Enough that stimulation therapy should have been continued.
Enough that his sedation plan needed review.
Enough that Bradley’s total control over care looked less like protection and more like obstruction.
Madeline felt sick.
“He was awake inside this?”
The neurologist answered carefully.
“He may have had periods of awareness.”
Christopher’s eyes were closed, but one tear slid from the corner.
Madeline wiped it gently.
“I’m sorry.”
His lips moved.
“Not you.”
Those two words nearly broke her.
An hour later, Elliot returned.
“Mara Ellis is alive.”
Madeline stood.
“Where?”
“New Jersey.”
“She left after receiving a settlement payment from a private shell company.”
Madeline looked toward the door.
“Bradley.”
Elliot nodded.
“She also sent a message to Christopher’s encrypted account the night she resigned.”
“What did it say?”
Elliot read from his phone.
I saw B.V. in the restricted garage at 2:11 a.m.
I heard him say the brakes would look like rain failure.
I’m scared.
I’m sorry.
Madeline’s knees weakened.
The watch.
The nurse.
Christopher’s voice.
It was all true.
Christopher opened his eyes again.
“Mara…”
Madeline leaned closer.
“We found her.”
His breathing changed.
Relief.
Then pain.
“She has video.”
Elliot looked up sharply.
Christopher forced the words out.
“Phone.”
“Vent.”
“Garage vent.”
Madeline stared.
Mara had not only witnessed something.
She had hidden evidence.
Bradley had paid her to disappear, but perhaps not before she created insurance of her own.
Madeline turned to Elliot.
“Get her protected before Bradley finds out.”
The hospital door opened.
Everyone turned.
Bradley stood outside the glass wall, phone to his ear, watching Madeline with a calm that no longer looked human.
He smiled.
