part 2

PART 2
Six months earlier, Ava Monroe had been carried out of a helicopter with blood on her uniform and no feeling below her waist.
The attack happened overseas during a classified evacuation mission.
A roadside blast.
A flipped armored vehicle.
Smoke.
Shouting.
Three civilians trapped under fire.
Ava remembered dragging one child behind a concrete wall before the second explosion hit.
Then nothing.
When she woke at Walter Reed, doctors told her the truth carefully.
Spinal trauma.
Severe nerve swelling.
Possible permanent paralysis.
Long rehabilitation.
No promises.
Ava listened without crying.
She had learned long ago that officers could not spend all their strength reacting to bad news.
But when the doctors left, she turned her face toward the window and let one tear run into her hair.
Adrian arrived two days later.
Handsome.
Worried.
Photogenic.
He sat beside her bed and kissed her hand.
“I’m here.”
Ava believed him.
At first.
He brought flowers.
He posted tasteful updates.
He told reporters his fiancée was a hero.
He stood beside her wheelchair during charity visits and looked devastated enough to be admired.
But behind closed doors, his voice changed.
He sighed when nurses explained exercises.
He looked away when she struggled to transfer from bed to chair.
He took business calls during pain sessions.
Once, when Ava dropped a cup and could not reach it, he stared at it for five seconds before picking it up.
Not because he forgot kindness.
Because he resented needing to perform it without an audience.
Ryan noticed first.
Ryan had been assigned as Ava’s protective detail after the attack because several threats remained active.
He never spoke out of place.
He never treated her as fragile.
He adjusted his pace to her wheelchair without making her feel slow.
When she apologized for needing help, he said, “You don’t apologize for surviving, ma’am.”
Adrian heard that and smiled coldly.
Later, he told Ava, “Your guard is too attached.”
Ava answered, “Ryan respects the uniform.”
Adrian looked at her legs under the blanket.
“What uniform?”
That was the first time Ava understood.
Adrian did not love her weakened.
May you like
He only loved being seen beside her strength.
