PART 7

Adrian tried to stop the recording.

That was his next mistake.

He lunged toward Denise.

Ryan intercepted him before he crossed two steps.

No violence.

No drama.

Just one hand raised between Adrian and the truth.

“Do not.”

Adrian’s face twisted.

“You work for me.”

Ryan’s voice stayed level.

“No.”

“I protect her.”

The recording continued.

Adrian laughed through the speaker.

She can barely get through a staircase.

The board needs someone donors can trust.

Once we are married, I can sign on her behalf.

Several guests turned toward the board members.

Two of them looked down.

Ava noticed.

She had expected that too.

General Hale gestured toward the ballroom doors.

Two officers stepped into view.

Not to arrest anyone yet.

To remind the room that consequences had entered.

Ava spoke into the microphone.

“Adrian Vale has no authority over my foundation.”

“He has no authority over my medical decisions.”

“He has no authority over my military status.”

“And as of this moment, he has no place in my future.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You’re ending our engagement like this?”

Ava looked at him.

“You ended it when you measured my worth by my legs.”

His mother, sitting near the front, stood suddenly.

“This is cruel.”

Ava turned to her.

“No.”

“Cruel is raising a man who thinks a woman becomes property when she needs help.”

The room inhaled as one.

Adrian’s mother sat down.

Ava removed the engagement ring slowly.

She held it up.

For the first time that night, her hand shook.

Not from weakness.

From grief.

Because betrayal still hurts even when you win.

She placed the ring on the empty wheelchair seat.

“This was given to a woman you thought you could use.”

She looked at Adrian.

“She no longer exists.”

Then Denise stepped forward with documents.

“The board has received emergency notice.”

“All attempted transfers are frozen.”

“All meetings Adrian arranged are void.”

“And the trustees who entertained unauthorized authority will be reviewed.”

One trustee stood.

“Ava, we were concerned.”

Ava’s eyes cut to him.

“You were available.”

May you like

“That is different.”
