PART 5
The ballroom was full before Ava arrived.
Adrian made sure of that.
He wanted witnesses to his sacrifice.
Former commanders.
Veteran donors.
Society friends.
Board members.
Local news crews.
Women who admired tragic romance.
Men who admired access.
The Monroe Foundation banner stood behind the stage.
Ava’s wheelchair rolled across the marble floor with Ryan behind her.
The gray blanket covered her legs.
Her white military dress uniform was perfectly pressed.
Her medals caught the light.
For a moment, the room stood and applauded.
Ava looked at the faces.
Some were sincere.
Some were curious.
Some were already pitying her.
Adrian approached with a smile and kissed her cheek.
Too close to the cameras.
“You look brave,” he whispered.
Ava answered softly, “I am.”
He missed the warning.
The first speech came from General Hale.
He spoke of service, sacrifice, and command.
Then Adrian took the microphone.
His voice warmed.
His eyes shone.
He told the room how difficult the months had been.
How he had “held Ava together.”
How love meant standing when the person you loved could not.
Ryan’s hands tightened on the wheelchair handles.
Ava remained still.
Then Adrian went too far.
He looked down at her.
“My fiancée may never lead the same way again.”
A murmur moved through the room.
Ava lifted her eyes.
Adrian continued.
“But with my support, her foundation will remain strong.”
Denise Park stood near the side wall and slowly opened the folder in her hands.
General Hale shifted one step closer to the stage.
Ava knew the moment had arrived.
She reached for the microphone.
Adrian held it away with a little smile.
“Careful, sweetheart.”
The room saw it.
Not everyone understood it.
But everyone saw.
Ava said quietly, “Give me the microphone.”
Adrian’s smile hardened.
“You should rest.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“Sir, hand it to her.”
Adrian turned on him.
“You are staff.”
Ryan’s face stayed calm.
“And she is the colonel.”
The ballroom froze.
Adrian laughed.
Then leaned down toward Ava, his voice sharp enough for the front rows to hear.
“You can’t even stand without help.”
Ava looked at General Hale.
The general nodded.

The trap closed.
