PART 4

The welcome-home event was Adrian’s idea before it became Ava’s trap.

He wanted cameras.

A ballroom.

Donors.

Military leaders.

A dramatic speech about love through hardship.

He wanted to stand beside Ava’s wheelchair and look noble.

Ava let him plan it.

She let him choose the champagne.

The flowers.

The seating chart.

The photographer.

She even let him approve the press statement describing him as “Colonel Monroe’s devoted fiancé.”

Ryan hated that part.

Ava could tell.

He read the draft once and placed it back on the table as if it smelled bad.

“Permission to speak freely?”

Ava looked up from her rehab notes.

“Always.”

“He is using your injury as a stage.”

Ava smiled faintly.

“That is why we are giving him one.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“You are certain about this?”

“No.”

She folded the paper.

“But I am certain about him.”

The deeper investigation came through the foundation accountant.

Her name was Denise Park.

She had worked for Ava for seven years and feared no man with expensive shoes.

Denise discovered Adrian had requested emergency signing authority.

Then donor access.

Then board transition documents.

Then private meetings with two trustees.

His argument was simple.

Ava’s disability made her vulnerable.

The foundation needed stability.

As her future husband, he should have power to protect her legacy.

Denise recorded one meeting.

Adrian’s voice was smooth.

“If Ava never walks again, she’ll need someone strong making decisions.”

A trustee asked if Ava agreed.

Adrian laughed.

“She can barely get through a staircase.”

That sentence sat inside Ava like ice.

Not because of the cruelty.

Because of the ease.

He did not say it in anger.

He said it in strategy.

That was worse.

General Hale listened to the recording with his face like stone.

“You want this handled quietly?”

Ava looked at the ballroom invitation on the desk.

“No.”

“Quiet lets people keep the reputation they used to hurt you.”

General Hale nodded.

“What do you need?”

Ava stood from her chair.

Not gracefully.

Not perfectly.

But upright.

“I need the room full.”

May you like

“And I need him to think I still cannot stand.”
