PART 6

Ryan moved first.

Not to lift Ava.

Not to rescue her.

To honor the chair.

He picked up the gray blanket that had slipped to the marble floor and folded it over the empty wheelchair seat.

“Ma’am, you still deserve respect.”

The sentence landed deeper than applause ever could.

Ava placed both hands on the chair arms.

Adrian rolled his eyes.

“Oh, please.”

General Hale stepped forward.

His voice filled the ballroom without a microphone.

“Colonel, the room is yours.”

Ava pushed herself up.

The first second was pain.

The second was balance.

The third was silence.

She stood fully upright.

White uniform.

Medals.

Chin lifted.

Shoulders squared.

The wheelchair sat empty beside her.

A woman in the front row gasped.

One of the trustees whispered, “My God.”

Adrian stepped backward.

His face drained of color.

“You can stand?”

Ava turned toward him.

“Yes.”

Then she looked at the crowd.

“I was testing who would stay when power was gone.”

No one moved.

The chandelier light reflected in the marble floor between them.

Ava reached out.

Ryan placed the microphone in her hand.

She did not thank him out loud.

She did not need to.

Her eyes said enough.

Then she faced the room.

“Six months ago, I was injured in service.”

“Some of you sent flowers.”

“Some of you sent prayers.”

“Some of you sent lawyers.”

A nervous ripple moved through the guests.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Ava continued.

“During my recovery, I learned that people treat power like oxygen.”

“When they believe you have it, they gather.”

“When they believe it is gone, they show you what they came for.”

She turned to Adrian.

“My fiancé believed the wheelchair made me manageable.”

Adrian hissed, “Ava.”

She lifted one finger.

He stopped.

That small silence was the first command he had ever obeyed.

Ava looked toward Denise.

“Play it.”

Denise connected a small speaker.

Adrian’s recorded voice filled the ballroom.

If Ava never walks again, she’ll need someone strong making decisions.
