PART 8

The ballroom split into two kinds of silence.

The guilty kind.

And the relieved kind.

Some guests looked away because they had pitied Ava too loudly.

Others smiled through tears because they understood exactly what she had done.

Ryan remained beside the wheelchair.

Not beside Ava.

Not too close.

Still protective.

Still careful not to turn loyalty into possession.

That mattered to her.

General Hale stepped to the microphone next.

“Colonel Monroe’s active status and future assignment are private military matters.”

He looked across the ballroom.

“But let me make one fact clear.”

“She has not been dismissed.”

“She has not been replaced.”

“And she remains one of the finest officers I have served with.”

Applause began slowly.

Then grew.

Adrian hated the sound.

It pushed him further from the center of the room.

He grabbed the ring from the wheelchair seat.

Ava’s voice stopped him.

“Leave it.”

He froze.

“That ring was mine.”

“No.”

“It was a contract you failed.”

Ryan stepped forward half an inch.

Adrian dropped the ring back onto the chair.

His humiliation became rage.

“You think standing up makes you powerful again?”

Ava looked at him with almost sadness.

“No.”

“Power was never in standing.”

“That is why you never understood it.”

The senior officer nodded toward security.

Adrian saw the movement and panicked.

“You can’t throw me out.”

General Hale said, “This is a private event under foundation security.”

Ava added, “And you are no longer invited.”

Security escorted Adrian toward the ballroom doors.

He fought only with words.

Cowards often do.

“You’ll regret this.”

Ava watched him go.

“I already did.”

When the doors closed behind him, the room seemed to exhale.

Ava’s knees ached fiercely.

Ryan noticed the tiny shift in her posture.

He brought the wheelchair closer without saying a word.

Not as a symbol of weakness.

As an option.

Ava looked at it.

Then at him.

He did not ask.

He waited.

She sat down slowly.

This time, no one pitied her.

They applauded again.

Not because she stood.

May you like

Because she chose.
