PART 1

“He slapped her because dinner wasn’t ready… then she served his whole family a silver platter of evidence.”

Audrey Vance did not scream when Dominic slapped her.

She simply turned her face with the force of it, one hand gripping the edge of the dining table, her bruised eye burning under the chandelier light.

The room went silent.

Not because anyone was shocked.

Because everyone was waiting to see whether she would finally break.

Dominic stood over her in his blue dress shirt, breathing hard, his face red with anger.

“You were supposed to cook dinner!”

Victoria, his mother, sat at the head of the table in white silk, holding her wine glass like a queen watching a servant being corrected.

Natalie, Dominic’s sister, sat beside her in a navy dress, lips parted, eyes darting toward the kitchen.

No one stood.

No one helped Audrey.

No one even said her name.

Audrey slowly touched her cheek.

Then she smiled.

Small.

Cold.

“I did.”

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

Audrey pushed herself up from the chair and walked toward the kitchen.

Her steps were steady.

Too steady.

Dominic laughed behind her.

“Finally.”

“Maybe you can still learn.”

Audrey entered the kitchen.

She did not touch the roasted chicken cooling on the counter.

She did not touch the salad.

She did not touch the plates she had set out before he hit her.

Instead, she lifted the silver serving tray from the island.

On it were printed photos, bank records, a flash drive, and a red bra folded like a confession.

When she returned, Dominic’s smile disappeared.

Audrey sat back down and lifted the red bra with a fork.

Victoria leaned forward, horror replacing arrogance.

“What did you put on that tray?”

Audrey pushed the tray toward the center of the table.

Her voice was calm enough to frighten every person in the room.

“Your son’s affair, your stolen money, and every camera angle of what he did to me.”

Dominic lunged.

The dining-room doors opened before he reached her.

Two police officers stepped in and grabbed him by the arms.

Natalie gasped.

Victoria dropped her wine glass.

It shattered across the floor.

The officer’s voice cut through the room.

“Dominic Vance, you’re under arrest.”

Audrey remained seated, the fork still in her hand like a gavel.

Tonight, she had not served dinner.

May you like

She had served the truth.
