PART 4
The dinner invitation went out at noon.
Audrey wrote it like any obedient wife.
Family dinner at seven.
Important conversation.
Please come hungry.
Dominic replied with a thumbs-up.
Natalie sent a champagne emoji.
Victoria called immediately.
“What are you making?”
Audrey looked at the folder open on her desk.
“Something unforgettable.”
Victoria sniffed.
“Do not be clever.”
Audrey almost smiled.
“I would not dream of it.”
By six, the dining room looked perfect.
Crystal glasses.
White plates.
Silver flatware.
Candles.
Fresh flowers.
The long table reflected the chandelier like polished ice.
In the kitchen, the real dinner waited untouched.
But the silver tray sat covered beneath a white cloth on the sideboard.
Under the cloth were six photographs.
Dominic entering the hotel with his assistant.
Natalie wearing the red bra in the guest suite doorway.
Victoria signing a foundation withdrawal approval.
Dominic striking Audrey near the pantry.
A bank transfer from the charity account to Natalie’s failed boutique.
And one still image from the dining-room camera.
Dominic with his hand raised.
Audrey had printed them large enough for everyone at the table to understand.
She had blurred nothing in the originals.
The copies for the tray were symbolic.
The police had the real files.
At 6:48, Officer Bennett texted Grace.
In position.
At 6:51, Grace texted Audrey.
Breathe.
At 6:59, Dominic walked in already irritated.
He had expected Audrey to be nervous.
She was calm.
That bothered him.
Victoria arrived with Natalie two minutes later.
Victoria wore white.
Natalie wore navy.
Both women looked at the empty table and exchanged a glance.
Dominic sat and tapped his fingers.
“Where’s dinner?”
Audrey stood near the chair beside him.
“In the kitchen.”
“Then bring it.”
“In a moment.”
His face tightened.
“I am not doing this tonight.”
Victoria sighed.
“Audrey, please do not embarrass yourself.”
Natalie poured wine and smiled.
“She probably burned it.”
Audrey looked at Dominic.
“I need everyone seated first.”
Dominic shoved back his chair and stood.
“You were supposed to cook dinner!”
The slap came so fast the candle flame flickered.
Audrey’s head turned.
Her cheek burned.
Across the wall, the tiny red camera light stayed on.
Audrey looked at it.
Then back at him.
May you like
Perfect.
