Dominic reacted exactly the way guilty men react when they realize wealth cannot interrupt a warrant.
He became offended.
“You cannot come into my house.”
Officer Bennett held up the paperwork.
“We can.”
Victoria stood.
“This is a private family matter.”
Audrey looked at her.
“Foundation theft is not a family matter.”
The second officer moved behind Dominic.
Dominic pointed at Audrey.
“She staged this.”
Audrey nodded.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
She looked directly at the camera above the sideboard.
“I staged a dinner where you would believe you were safe enough to show everyone who you are.”
Dominic’s face twisted.
“You psycho.”
Officer Bennett stepped closer.
“Hands behind your back.”
Dominic stepped away.
Natalie whispered, “Dom, don’t.”
He turned on her.
“Shut up.”
That was when Victoria understood the room had shifted beyond her control.
She tried to soften her face.
“Audrey, sweetheart.”
Audrey did not blink.
“You called me barren at Easter.”
Victoria went pale.
“That was taken out of context.”
Audrey picked up one printed still from the tray.
“Would you like the audio?”
Victoria sat down.
Natalie’s breathing became shallow.
Grace Holloway entered next, carrying a sealed evidence case.
Dominic stared at her.
“Who are you?”
Grace smiled.
“The woman who followed your money.”
That sentence terrified Victoria more than the officers did.
Grace placed the case beside the tray.
“Copies of account transfers, donor statements, internal approvals, vendor invoices, and surveillance files have been preserved.”
Natalie’s voice cracked.
“I did not steal anything.”
Grace looked at her.
“You signed three invoices.”
Natalie shook her head.
“Mom told me it was temporary.”
Victoria snapped, “Be quiet.”
Too late.
The officer heard it.
Audrey heard it.
Grace heard it.
The room heard the mother protecting herself before her daughter.
Dominic tried one final performance.
He looked at Audrey with tears suddenly appearing.
“Baby.”
Audrey almost laughed.
He had not called her that in months.
“Do not do this.”
Audrey leaned back in her chair.
“You did it.”
“I plated it.”
Officer Bennett pulled Dominic’s wrists behind his back.
“Dominic Vance, you’re under arrest.”
The handcuffs clicked.
Audrey looked at the silver tray.
For the first time all night, she felt hungry.
