Dominic sat at the defense table in a gray suit.
He looked smaller without his house around him.
Victoria sat behind him.
Natalie sat on the other side of the aisle.
That distance told the room everything.

Her voice shook.

“Victoria told me not to ask questions.”
“I knew it was wrong.”
“But I was scared.”
Victoria stared at her daughter like betrayal was something only other people committed.
Then Audrey gave her statement.
She stood carefully.
The bruise had faded to yellow at the edges.
Still visible.
“I was told I was lucky to be in that family.”
She looked at Dominic.
“I was told obedience was peace.”
She looked at Victoria.
“I was told violence was my fault if I made it inconvenient for other people.”
Then she looked at the judge.
“I brought evidence to the table because that was the only language they respected.”
Dominic lowered his eyes.
Victoria did not.
The judge granted the protective order.
The foundation accounts remained frozen.
