PART 8

Dominic made bail the next afternoon.

That was expected.

Men like Dominic always had a lawyer waiting before regret arrived.

What he did not have was access.

Audrey had already filed for an emergency protective order.

The house locks were changed.

His accounts were frozen.

His passport was surrendered.

And the dining-room footage was now in police custody.

He called from a blocked number.

Audrey did not answer.

He emailed.

She forwarded everything to Grace.

He sent flowers.

Audrey donated them to the police station lobby with no note.

Then came the headline.

LOCAL CHARITY FOUNDATION UNDER INVESTIGATION AFTER DOMESTIC ARREST AT VANCE ESTATE.

Victoria called Audrey within minutes.

Grace answered on speaker.

Victoria’s voice was sharp and shaking.

“You have destroyed our family.”

Audrey sat at the kitchen island, a cup of untouched tea between her hands.

“No.”

“I stopped your family from destroying me quietly.”

Victoria tried a different tone.

Soft.

Almost motherly.

“Audrey, we can still settle this.”

“You need money.”

“You need protection.”

“You need a way out without scandal.”

Audrey looked at Grace.

Grace shook her head.

Audrey spoke clearly.

“I need you to understand something.”

“The scandal is not that I told.”

“The scandal is what you did.”

Victoria went silent.

Then hissed, “You ungrateful little nobody.”

Audrey smiled faintly.

“There she is.”

Grace ended the call.

The investigation widened.

Donors came forward.

Former employees submitted complaints.

A bookkeeper admitted she had been ordered to alter records.

Dominic’s assistant, the woman from the hotel photo, turned over messages proving Dominic promised to divorce Audrey after “the foundation mess was buried.”

Natalie gave a full statement.

Not clean.

Not noble.

But useful.

Audrey did not forgive her.

She did not need to.

Truth does not require forgiveness to be valuable.

The first hearing was scheduled for Friday.

Audrey dressed in a simple black suit.

She covered nothing.

Not the bruise.

Not the swollen cheek.

Not the faint mark on her wrist where Dominic had grabbed her.

Before leaving, she entered the dining room alone.

The table had been cleaned.

The candles removed.

The silver tray gone.

But the room still remembered.

Audrey touched the back of the chair where she had sat.

Then whispered to the empty room.

May you like

“I am not serving silence anymore.”
