Chapter 13 - The Founder VaultThe vault had no visible emergency exit.

Margaret stood outside with Richard’s security team.
She looked as trapped by the development as everyone inside.
“You were not supposed to return here,” she told him through the speaker.
Richard answered, “You were not supposed to choose Maya over my sons.”
Margaret had promised him legal control through the marriage alliance.
But she never intended Ethan or Julian to become founders.
They were tools.
Richard discovered the deception and created his own escape plan.
The replacement bride.
The forged medical amendment.
The false Evelyn.
The wedding was supposed to give him multiple paths into Hart Biomedical.
Article Nine closed all of them.
Now he wanted the founder keys directly.
Inside the vault stood Evelyn, Thomas, Maya, Robert, and Miriam.
Three generations of blood.
Two founders presumed dead.
One substitute founder recognized by the old system.
Richard demanded Evelyn transfer Hart Biomedical into a Vale-controlled holding company.
“Or?”
“The vault loses oxygen.”
Maya looked at the vents.
“You would kill all of us?”
“Not all.”
Richard had prepared medical records showing Maya survived a carbon monoxide accident while the others died.
He would rescue her as the sole Hart heir.
Then Ethan would remain her legal spouse.
Even if she hated him, the marriage gave the Vales access.
Ethan heard the threat through police communication and shouted toward his father.
“You’re going to kill her.”
Richard answered, “You were supposed to keep her cooperative.”
“I loved her.”
“You failed her exactly when it mattered.”
Maya looked away.
The sentence was cruel because it contained truth.
Ethan had remained silent about the trust.
He accepted his father’s guidance.
He enjoyed the life attached to Maya’s inheritance.
He had not pushed her from the car.
But he had helped build the road leading there.
Inside the vault, Robert opened an old maintenance panel.
Hart Tower’s original design included a pneumatic archive tube running from the vault to the laboratory floor.
Too narrow for a person.
Wide enough for a memory card.
Evelyn inserted the founder key and Thomas’s recordings into a protective capsule.
Maya added her phone containing the roadside evidence and Article Nine activation.
Miriam added the replacement-network archive.
They sent everything upward.
Richard detected the transfer.
Oxygen levels began falling faster.
Thomas searched the medical equipment.
“Richard needs us conscious long enough to sign.”
“That means he has a way to open the door,” Evelyn said.
Robert looked at Margaret through the camera.
“She has the emergency key.”
Margaret denied it.
Miriam laughed.
“You wore it around your neck for twenty years.”
Margaret touched the diamond pendant at her throat.
Inside was a mechanical override.
Richard’s security men surrounded her.
He ordered her to walk away.
For once, Margaret had to choose without controlling every consequence.
Protect the system she built with Richard.
Or free the family that had rejected her.
She removed the necklace.
Richard’s men moved closer.
Margaret threw it through the narrow service slot before they caught her.
Maya retrieved it.
Robert inserted the key.
The vault opened three inches before Richard’s override stopped it.
Enough for air.
Not enough to escape.
Evelyn placed her cane inside the gap to prevent closure.
The white shaft bent beneath the pressure.
Thomas joined her.
Together, they forced the door wider.
Outside, Margaret struck one guard with the metal clasp.
Federal investigators entered from the laboratory corridor after receiving the archive capsule.
A struggle erupted.
No final arrests occurred.
Richard disappeared through the founder tunnel.
Margaret remained beside the vault, breathing hard.
Evelyn stepped out.
Mother and daughter faced each other.
“You opened the door,” Evelyn said.
Margaret answered, “Do not mistake one choice for redemption.”
“I won’t.”
Maya emerged next.
She looked at Margaret.
“You built a replacement for me.”
“I built survival options.”
“You built a life where no one had to love the real person.”
Margaret had no answer.
Then Hart Tower’s rooftop alarm activated.
A helicopter prepared to depart.
Thermal imaging showed Richard boarding with another passenger.
Thomas stared at the screen.
The second person looked like Evelyn.
Not Helena.
A third woman.
She carried Evelyn’s founder cane and wore the same eye scar.
Miriam’s expression changed.
“That one is not a replacement.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Who is she?”
Miriam answered:
May you like
“Your twin sister.”
👉 Richard escaped with a woman identical to Evelyn—revealing Margaret had hidden another daughter from the family.
