Chapter 5 - The Secret in the White CanePolice sealed the ballroom exits.

Julian Vale remained in the underground garage with no idea the security feed had activated.
Officer Daniel and two venue guards moved downstairs.
Evelyn watched from the ballroom screen.
Julian placed the capsule inside his jacket and opened the Tesla’s driver door.
The car recognized Maya’s digital key.
She stared at the screen.
“I never gave him access.”
Ethan answered quietly.
“Our family account shares emergency vehicle permissions.”
“Why?”
“My father said it was safer.”
Every convenience created by the Vale family had become another form of control.
Julian entered the car.
Before he could start it, officers surrounded him.
He raised both hands.
The capsule remained inside his pocket.
When Lena opened it upstairs, she found a memory card no larger than a fingernail.
Evelyn turned the cane over in her hands.
Her late husband had ordered it custom-made after her accident.
The cane arrived anonymously three months after she left the hospital.
She assumed it came from the rehabilitation charity.
Thomas must have arranged it.
The memory card contained encrypted audio logs.
The first began on the night of the crash.
Thomas’s voice spoke quickly.
“Richard altered the company transfer. If anything happens, the real ownership key is inside Evelyn’s mobility device.”
Evelyn stared.
The cane did not merely hold evidence.
It contained the master key to Hart Biomedical.
After Thomas disappeared, Richard took operational control.
Evelyn still owned the company legally, but a voting deadlock prevented her from removing him.
The key could unlock Thomas’s founder shares.
Together, Evelyn and Thomas’s shares represented seventy-two percent.
Richard had spent six years searching for them.
He never suspected they traveled beside Evelyn every day.
Julian claimed he received an anonymous message instructing him to recover the capsule during the wedding emergency.
“Who sent it?” Lena asked.
“The account said Thomas Hart.”
Evelyn’s heart tightened.
“Was it live?”
“No. Scheduled.”
The instructions told Julian that Richard planned to destroy Hart Biomedical after the wedding and transfer its patents abroad.
If Julian recovered the key, he would receive ten percent of the company.
Ethan looked at his brother with disgust.
“You believed that?”
Julian looked back.
“You believed Dad introduced you to Maya because he cared about your happiness.”
The brothers stood on opposite sides of the same realization.
Richard had assigned each of them a role.
Ethan married Maya.
Julian recovered the founder key.
Neither knew the full plan.
Maya asked what the key could do.
Evelyn opened the corporate control portal.
The memory card completed authentication.
Hart Biomedical’s ownership structure appeared.
Richard Vale was not merely a temporary executive.
He had transferred patents, subsidiaries, and research contracts into Vale-controlled shell companies.
The million-dollar marital trust was insignificant compared with what he had stolen.
Maya stepped closer.
“What is the company worth?”
Evelyn did not look at her.
“More than you married for.”
Article Nine froze the trust.
The founder key froze Hart Biomedical.
Every Vale-controlled transfer halted.
Richard’s phone began filling with alerts.
For the first time, he appeared genuinely afraid.
Then another account activated.
THOMAS HART—FOUNDER ACCESS RESTORED.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
A user had logged in with Thomas’s biometric credentials thirty seconds earlier.
Not a stored password.
A live fingerprint and facial scan.
Thomas was alive and actively accessing the company.
The system traced the login.
Blackwater Recovery Center, Vermont.
A second alert appeared.
PATIENT TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.
Destination:
Boston.
Transport sponsor:
Maya Hart.
Maya’s face drained.
“I didn’t authorize that.”
The transport record included her signature.
And the patient was not Thomas.

It was a woman registered as Evelyn Hart.
👉 Thomas’s founder access activated from the private clinic, while someone using Maya’s signature transported a second woman under Evelyn’s identity.
