Chapter 6 - The Other Evelyn HartThe patient file described a fifty-eight-year-old woman with facial trauma, partial blindness, and a left-eye scar.

Every identifying detail matched Evelyn.

The attached photograph did not.

The woman looked similar enough to pass at a distance, but her jawline and nose were different.

She had spent six years inside Blackwater Recovery Center under Evelyn’s name.

Medical invoices, psychiatric reports, and guardianship evaluations all belonged to her.

Richard had created a substitute patient.

If Evelyn challenged him publicly, he could produce medical records showing years of paranoia, delusion, and institutional treatment.

The real Evelyn would be called an impostor.

Maya sat down.

“This can’t be real.”

Evelyn faced her.

“You threw me out of a moving car because of how I looked. Now you are discovering how easily powerful people replace a woman they consider inconvenient.”

Maya flinched.

The officers questioned Richard about the substitute patient.

He denied knowledge.

His attorney claimed Hart Biomedical’s privacy division managed the clinic relationship.

Evelyn opened payment records.

Richard personally approved every transfer.

His signature appeared on monthly invoices labeled:

CONTINUITY MAINTENANCE—E.H.

Dr. Rowan spoke before his lawyer could stop him.

“She was supposed to be temporary.”

Everyone turned.

Rowan admitted the substitute was a professional patient named Helena Ward.

After the crash, Richard needed medical records proving Evelyn was unstable. Helena underwent cosmetic procedures to resemble her and entered Blackwater under Evelyn’s identity.

The arrangement was supposed to last six months.

Then Thomas escaped his first holding site.

Richard extended the substitution to preserve leverage.

“Where is Thomas?” Evelyn asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You treated him.”

“Only at the beginning.”

“Did he survive?”

“Yes.”

The answer struck the room.

Maya looked toward Evelyn, perhaps expecting tears.

Evelyn felt too much for any emotion to emerge cleanly.

Thomas was alive.

He had remained alive through every birthday, every lonely anniversary, every year she raised Maya alone.

Whether he stayed away by force or choice remained unknown.

The clinic transport continued toward Boston.

Police contacted Vermont authorities and requested the vehicle stopped.

The transport company reported no patient aboard.

The ambulance had left Blackwater empty.

The false transfer record existed only to make investigators chase the wrong vehicle.

At the same time, the clinic’s server began deleting files.

Someone inside Blackwater knew the ballroom had uncovered the operation.

Officer Lena requested a federal cyber unit preserve the data.

Evelyn used the founder key to block Hart Biomedical systems from communicating with the clinic.

The deletion stopped halfway.

One surviving video opened.

Helena Ward sat inside a patient room wearing a navy dress identical to Evelyn’s.

A voice behind the camera instructed her.

“When you reach the wedding, identify yourself as Evelyn Hart. Say the woman with the cane stole your identity after the crash.”

Maya covered her mouth.

The substitute had been prepared to appear tonight.

Richard’s plan extended beyond the roadside assault.

He expected Article Nine might activate.

If it did, Helena would enter the ballroom and claim to be the true trust owner.

Evelyn’s scar, blindness, and emotional distress would be used as proof she was confused.

The ballroom doors opened again.

A woman stepped inside wearing Evelyn’s face.

Her hair was styled the same way.

A dark lens covered her left eye.

She carried a white cane.

Guests gasped.

Helena looked directly at Evelyn.

Then she said:

“That woman is not my daughter.”

Maya stared between them.

The substitute raised one trembling finger.

May you like

“She stole my life.”

👉 Richard’s replacement Evelyn arrived at the wedding, prepared to turn every record and witness against the real woman.
