Chapter 9 - Margaret HartEvelyn had buried her mother at Rosehill Cemetery.
She remembered choosing the casket.
She remembered Maya placing a white rose on it.
Margaret died after a long illness.
At least, that was what the family had been told.
The woman beside Thomas looked older now, but unmistakable.
Maya gripped Ethan’s arm.
“That was Grandma.”
Richard finally spoke without his attorney.
“Margaret founded the continuity program.”
Evelyn turned toward him.
“What program?”
Hart Biomedical developed advanced identity protection for witnesses, corporate researchers, and families under threat.
The program began legally.
Margaret believed conventional protection failed wealthy targets because bank records, hospitals, and trusts always revealed their identities.
She created duplicate records, controlled medical histories, and substitute legal profiles.
People could disappear without losing access to assets.
Then the system became useful for something else.
Removing inconvenient owners.
Replacing patients.
Transferring authority.
Manufacturing incapacity.
Margaret did not die.
She entered her own program and continued controlling Hart Biomedical from outside public view.
Thomas discovered the corruption.
Richard helped manage it.
Evelyn became a target after the crash because Margaret believed her daughter lacked the ruthlessness required to protect the company.
“You let me mourn her,” Evelyn said.
Richard answered, “She ordered it.”
“And Thomas?”
“He refused succession.”
“You imprisoned him.”
“I preserved him until Margaret decided whether he could be trusted.”
Maya looked between them.
“What does any of this have to do with me?”
Richard’s answer was quiet.
“You were supposed to become Margaret’s successor.”
Maya stepped backward.
The trust, education, social training, board position, and marriage had prepared her for control of the continuity network.
Evelyn had believed she was giving her daughter opportunities.
Margaret had shaped those opportunities from the shadows.
Ethan’s family was selected because the Vales managed legal systems, private clinics, and political relationships.
Maya would inherit Hart Biomedical.
Ethan would provide legal structure.
Their marriage would unite both networks.
Article Nine threatened that plan because Evelyn inserted it secretly after discovering unexplained changes in her trust.
Margaret ordered Richard to remove the clause.
He failed.
So he prepared another Evelyn.
Maya looked toward Helena.
“Was she supposed to become my mother?”
Helena answered bitterly.
“She was supposed to become your witness.”
At the exact moment Article Nine activated, Helena would claim Evelyn was unstable, confused, and violent.
Maya would support the claim after the roadside confrontation.
Police would treat the event as a family mental-health crisis.
Richard would assume temporary control.
The wedding would continue.
Maya stared at her mud-stained mother.
“You knew something was wrong.”
“I knew enough to protect the trust. Not enough to know my own mother was alive.”
The Blackwater feed returned.
Thomas and Margaret stood inside a control room.
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
“Evelyn, bring Maya to Hart Tower before dawn.”
“No.”
“Then Thomas remains where he is.”
Maya stepped forward.
“What do you want from me?”
Margaret smiled.
“To see whether you are still capable of becoming family.”
Evelyn felt cold.
Her mother had watched Maya throw her from the Tesla.
Perhaps Article Nine was not the only test triggered tonight.
Perhaps Margaret wanted to see whether Maya would choose status over blood.
Maya had already answered.
Margaret continued.
“The wedding trust is irrelevant. Hart Biomedical is not. Ethan may accompany you. Richard may not.”
Richard’s face changed.
He had believed himself essential.
Margaret was discarding him.
Then another notification appeared.
Hart Tower’s security system recognized an incoming board vote.
Proposal:
REMOVE EVELYN HART AS FOUNDER. APPOINT MAYA HART VALE.
Maya’s electronic signature was already attached.
She looked at Evelyn in horror.
“I didn’t sign that.”
The second signature belonged to Thomas.
On-screen, Thomas shook his head.
“They used my hand.”
A third approval remained pending.
Margaret looked toward Maya.
