Chapter 3 - The Doctor at the Back DoorOfficer Daniel blocked the physician before he reached the exit.

The man identified himself as Dr. Charles Rowan, a retired emergency specialist.
Evelyn remembered his voice better than his face.
Six years earlier, she had lain trapped inside the crushed passenger side of Thomas’s car, blood covering one eye.
Someone leaned through the broken window and said:
“Your husband is gone. Stay still.”
That voice belonged to Rowan.
Maya stared at him.
“Why is he here?”
Richard answered too quickly.
“Charles is an old family friend.”
Evelyn looked from Richard to Rowan.
“You negotiated the crash settlement together.”
Rowan lowered his eyes.
The officers separated the two men.
Maya protested that her wedding had become a police interrogation.
No one listened.
Lena asked Evelyn whether Thomas’s death had ever seemed suspicious.
“At the time, no.”
“What changed?”
“Richard’s forged authority over my trust. Rowan’s presence. And the fact that both men knew Article Nine before Maya did.”
Richard’s attorney arrived within minutes.
That speed suggested he had been waiting nearby.
The attorney argued that the trust dispute was civil and unrelated to the roadside assault.
Lena disagreed.
“A forged amendment may establish motive.”
Maya’s hands trembled.
She turned toward Evelyn.
“Did you invite the police?”
“No. You created the reason they came.”
“I didn’t know the car was still moving.”
“You accelerated after I fell.”
Maya looked toward Ethan for support.
He stared at his father.
“What did you sign?”
Richard remained silent.
Ethan approached the officers.
“I need to see the amendment.”
When Lena allowed him to read the photographed copy, he pointed to the witness line.
His own signature appeared there.
Ethan staggered.
“I never witnessed this.”
Richard’s attorney told him not to speak.
Ethan ignored him.
“I was twenty-five when this was dated. I had never met Maya or Evelyn.”
The forgery involved all of them.
Not only Evelyn’s signature.
Richard had created a document years earlier using his son’s future identity as a witness.
That meant the plan began before Ethan and Maya met.
Evelyn looked at Maya.
“How did you meet Ethan?”
“At a museum fundraiser.”
“Who invited you?”
Maya frowned.
“The Vale Foundation.”
Ethan answered at the same time.
“My father.”
The room went still.
Richard had introduced them deliberately.
Maya seemed to understand for the first time that she might not be the only manipulator in the room.
She had believed she was marrying upward.
Perhaps she had been selected.
Dr. Rowan asked for medical attention, claiming chest pain.
Daniel requested paramedics while keeping him seated.
Evelyn watched Rowan remove a silver pill case.
The lid bore a symbol she recognized.
A small black falcon.
Thomas had worn the same symbol on a cuff link the night he died.
She stepped closer.
“Where did you get that?”
Rowan closed the case.
“Medical society.”
“No. That emblem belonged to my husband.”
Richard looked toward him sharply.
Rowan realized he had made a mistake.
Evelyn remembered finding only one cuff link after the crash. The second had disappeared.
She had assumed it was lost in the wreckage.
Now Rowan carried it embedded in his pill case.
Officer Lena seized the object.
Rowan’s chest pain vanished.
Evelyn faced him.
“You were inside the car after the crash.”
“I treated you.”
“You took something from Thomas.”
“I don’t remember.”
“You turned his cuff link into a trophy.”
Rowan’s face tightened.
Then Maya’s smartwatch buzzed.
She looked down.
A scheduled video file had been sent from her own account.
The title read:
IF THE WEDDING STOPS, PLAY THIS.
Maya opened it.
Thomas Hart appeared on-screen.
Alive.

The video had been recorded three days after his official death.
👉 A hidden video proved Evelyn’s husband survived the crash—and someone had scheduled it to appear only if Maya’s wedding collapsed.
