She Watched Him Hurt Ethan / Chapter 13 / 21

Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE Green House Four stood sixty miles north of Columbus behind an abandoned therapeutic farm.

The main building had burned three years earlier.

County records declared the property uninhabitable.

Thermal imaging showed three heated rooms beneath the foundation.

Detective Cole prepared a raid.

Brooke asked to accompany the command team.

Attorney Rachel Dunn objected.

“You are eighteen, but you are also Ethan’s primary source of stability. If something happens to you—”

“Then Ethan is protected by people I have verified, not sent anywhere under a stranger’s order.”

Brooke had chosen Dr. Reed, Rachel, and an independent child advocate to remain with him.

She did not ask Ethan to help find their father.

He had already carried the key long enough.

Before Brooke left, Ethan handed her a drawing.

A green house.

A man inside.

Four black stars above the roof.

One star had been colored red.

“Dad hurt there,” Ethan said.

Brooke folded the drawing carefully.

“I will not promise what I’m going to find.”

He touched the green door.

“Open anyway.”

The raid began shortly before dawn.

Cole’s team entered through an old livestock tunnel while federal agents approached the visible entrance.

The underground structure resembled a small rehabilitation hospital. One room contained braces, feeding tubes, and neurological equipment. Another held video cameras facing a single chair.

The third room was empty.

A hospital bed remained warm.

Blood marked the sheet where an intravenous line had recently been removed.

On the wall, someone had written two names repeatedly.

BROOKE.

ETHAN.

Brooke pressed her hand against the letters.

They had been carved at different heights, over many years.

Luke had been there.

A camera activated above the bed.

Margaret appeared on the screen from police custody.

Cole turned toward the officer guarding her feed.

Margaret had requested an emergency interview the moment the raid began.

“They moved him yesterday,” she said.

“Who?” Cole demanded.

“My daughter.”

“Maren?”

“Yes.”

Maren Shaw had not merely forged Brooke’s identity at Room 317. She had inherited Margaret’s emergency transport network.

Margaret claimed Maren believed Luke carried the only testimony capable of destroying every Cedar Ridge placement, including cases where children had formed strong bonds with new families.

“She thinks exposure will hurt them.”

“She attempted to steal the archive,” Brooke said.

“She believes controlling disclosure is different from concealment.”

“It isn’t when she decides alone.”

Margaret gave them a vehicle route.

Cole did not trust it.

She checked highway cameras independently.

A green ambulance matching the description had traveled south toward the old Walker Contracting property.

They were taking Luke back to the place where he fell.

Brooke understood why.

The warehouse remained the official death scene. If Luke’s body was found there after five years, the network could claim he had died during the original accident and been concealed inside an inaccessible industrial cavity.

A second death arranged to validate the first.

Police reached Warehouse Three as smoke rose from the loading platform.

Maren stood near Door 317 wearing a respirator.

Luke lay on a wheeled stretcher beside her.

He was alive.

His hair had gone gray near the temples. A scar crossed the left side of his head. One leg was secured inside a rigid brace.

Maren held a canister connected to the fire-suppression system.

“Do not come closer.”

Cole stopped.

Brooke stepped from behind the tactical shield before anyone could prevent her.

Luke’s eyes opened.

He looked directly at her.

“Brooke.”

The voice was weak.

But it was his.

For five years, she had replayed his final video and tried to remember whether she had told him she loved him on the morning he died.

Now the dead man had spoken her name.

Maren pulled the canister valve.

Green smoke flooded the platform.

Officers lost sight of everyone.

Brooke heard a metal crash.

Then Luke shouting:

“Not the stairs!”

She moved toward his voice.

A figure seized her coat.

Brooke struck backward.

Maren fell against the railing, but another person emerged through Door 317 and dragged Luke’s stretcher into the hidden stairwell.

The figure wore Gary’s old Walker Contracting jacket.

Gary remained in hospital custody.

Someone else had been using his identity inside the warehouse.

When the smoke cleared, Maren was unconscious.

Luke was gone again.

On the floor where the stretcher had stood lay a second death certificate.

This one had been issued that morning.

👉 Brooke finally saw her father alive, but Cedar Ridge removed him again under a newly prepared certificate declaring that Luke Mercer had died for the second time.
