Chapter 8 - THE TRAP INSIDE ROOM 317Police did not cancel the release meeting.

They used it to draw Gary out.
The escrow company prepared a false archive key. Detective Cole positioned officers inside the abandoned warehouse while Brooke remained at a secure command post two blocks away.
Laura agreed to call Gary.
Her hands shook as Cole activated the recorder.
“I have Brooke,” Laura said when he answered.
Gary’s voice came through the speaker.
“Is Ethan with her?”
“No.”
“Then you failed again.”
“She’ll sign if you promise to leave him alone.”
Gary laughed quietly.
“You still think promises are how this works.”
He instructed Laura to bring Brooke through the green door at eleven twenty-five. No police. No phones.
Laura asked where he had been hiding.
“Near enough to hear everything you told them.”
The line disconnected.
Cole traced the signal.
It came from inside the hospital.
Gary had never left the area.
Security footage revealed him moving through maintenance corridors wearing an orderly’s uniform. Maren Shaw had supplied the badge.
He had watched Ethan’s transfer attempt from another floor.
Police searched the hospital but found only the discarded uniform.
At eleven twenty-three, movement appeared inside Room 317.
Maren Shaw entered carrying the false archive paperwork.
She wore a dark wig styled like Brooke’s hair and carried copied identification.
Gary followed.
He held the leather belt inside a clear evidence bag.
“He brought the belt?” Brooke asked from the command vehicle.
Cole understood immediately.
Gary planned to plant Brooke’s fingerprints on it and claim she had beaten Ethan.
If the archive was later released, he would argue that Luke’s daughter fabricated abuse to gain control of the trust.
Maren placed a biometric scanner on the desk.
“Where is the girl?” Gary demanded.
“Laura couldn’t bring her.”
“You said you had the hospital sample.”
“I do.”
Maren produced a thin fingerprint membrane created from Brooke’s admission scan.
She pressed it against the device.
The system accepted the false identity.
Brooke stared at the monitor.
Her own name appeared above Maren’s authorization.
Gary inserted the archive key.
The file began opening.
Police moved.
Before officers entered, Gary heard a sound through the hidden stairwell. He seized Maren and pulled her toward the loading platform where Luke died.
“You told them,” he snarled.
“No!”
Gary raised the belt.
Cole shouted through the door.
“Drop it!”
Gary shoved Maren aside and ran toward the platform.
Officers blocked the exit.
For one second, he stood at the same railing where Luke had fallen.
Brooke watched through the live feed.
Gary looked directly into a security camera.
“You think Luke was the first father who tried to stop us?”
Then he jumped from the platform.
A crash sounded below.
The camera lost sight of him.
Officers rushed downstairs.
Gary had landed on the roof of a moving utility truck passing beneath the loading bay.
The truck accelerated through the rear gate.
Police vehicles pursued.
Maren remained on the floor, sobbing.
She claimed she never knew Gary planned to harm Ethan.
Cole placed the forged documents beside her.
“You tracked two children, created false transfer orders, and attempted to steal an archive under a minor’s identity.”
Maren closed her eyes.
“I thought Cedar Ridge saved children from dangerous homes.”
“You watched the kitchen video.”
“Gary showed me only Brooke swinging the chair.”
Another edited story.
Another professional who accepted the version that preserved her role.
The pursuit ended near the interstate.
Police found the utility truck abandoned with blood on the roof.
Gary had disappeared into a wooded drainage corridor.
Inside the cab was a laptop connected to Cedar Ridge’s central server.
The system displayed hundreds of family files.
One file was open.
MERCER FAMILY — ACTIVE RECRUITER: LAURA MERCER WALKER.
Brooke turned toward her mother.

Laura’s involvement had begun before Gary entered their home.
👉 The server identified Laura not only as Gary’s victim and accomplice—but as the person who first selected families for him.
