Brooke stood behind the observation glass.
“Dad is not your witness.”
Maren looked toward her.
“He became one when he copied files containing sealed child identities.”
“He became your prisoner.”
“He could have exposed families who did not know their adoptions began illegally.”
“Then independent courts should examine them.”
“Courts built Cedar Ridge.”
“Some people in courts did. That does not give you ownership of everyone’s truth.”
Maren turned away.
Detective Cole recovered a fingerprint from Luke’s second death certificate.
It belonged to a man named Andrew Shaw.
Margaret’s husband.
Public records said Andrew died twelve years earlier in a construction accident.
No body had been independently identified.
The network had spent decades declaring people dead, then using them as workers beneath new identities.
Cole ordered the exhumation of Luke Mercer’s grave.
Brooke did not attend.
She remained with Ethan while forensic specialists opened the coffin.
The remains belonged to a man in his early thirties who had died from blunt-force trauma.
DNA excluded Luke.
The dead man was Daniel Hart—the father of the oldest boy found in the memory ward.
Daniel Hart the child had been given his father’s full name after the disappearance.

Rachel explained the legal consequences.
“If Luke never died, Laura’s marriage to Gary may be invalid.”
Brooke looked toward the guarded room where her mother waited.
“That is the least important thing this changes.”
Laura asked to speak before police questioned her again.
Brooke agreed only because Ethan’s advocate believed Laura might know where Luke had been moved.
Laura entered without makeup or jewelry. Her hands shook.
“I received calls,” she said.
Brooke did not understand at first.
“What calls?”
“From your father.”
The first came three weeks after the funeral.
Luke spoke for less than twenty seconds. He said he was injured and Cedar Ridge was keeping him inside a medical house.
Laura heard Margaret take the phone.
Margaret offered a choice.
Report the call, and both children would enter emergency placement before Luke could be located.
Remain silent, and Brooke and Ethan would stay home.
“You chose silence,” Brooke said.
“Yes.”
“For one call?”
“There were seven.”
Seven times Luke reached her.
Seven times Laura told herself staying quiet protected the children.
During the fourth call, Luke warned her that Gary was approaching the family.
Margaret claimed marrying him would keep the network from classifying Laura as an uncooperative parent.
“You married the man who pushed Dad.”
“I believed he would take you if I refused.”
“You later selected families for him.”
Laura began crying.
“I was trying to become useful enough that he would not remove you.”
“You made other children replace us.”
“Yes.”
The answer did not restore anything.
It did provide information.
During the final call, Luke mentioned hearing trains at exactly 2:10 every morning and bells at sunrise. He said the property smelled like chlorine and wet wood.
Cole mapped the details.
One Cedar Ridge facility matched them: a closed summer camp beside a freight line and an abandoned church.
Camp Meridian.
The property belonged to Andrew Shaw.
Margaret’s supposedly dead husband.
Before the raid began, the forensic team opened Daniel Hart’s old missing-person file.
He had disappeared after reporting that his son was being drugged at school.
The last person to interview him was Margaret Shaw.
Daniel had secretly recorded the conversation.
Margaret’s voice said:
“Some fathers protect their children by remaining visible.”
Andrew answered from the same room:
“Others protect them by becoming evidence.”
The audio ended with Daniel asking:
“What did you do with Luke Mercer?”
Andrew replied:

“He is learning why a dead father is more useful than a living witness.”
