Chapter 4 - STORAGE UNIT 317 Walker Contracting had shut down two years after Luke Mercer’s death.
Gary told the family the company collapsed under insurance costs and grief. Public records showed that he quietly transferred equipment into another business registered under his cousin’s name.
The old property remained vacant outside Columbus.
Detective Cole searched the original accident report.
Luke fell inside Warehouse Three, near a loading platform painted with industrial green epoxy.
The photograph of the scene showed a steel door behind the platform.

“He remembered.”
“He was four,” Cole said. “Do you know why he might have been there?”
Brooke remembered the day.
Laura was supposed to take both children to their grandmother’s house. Ethan became carsick, so she said she returned home with him.
Brooke had never questioned it.
Laura now claimed Ethan’s drawing came from old photographs.
The accident report contained no public image of Door 317.
Police obtained a warrant.
Gary disappeared before officers reached the property.
His truck was found behind a grocery store with the keys inside.
Laura denied knowing where he had gone.
Cole led the search of the warehouse while Brooke and Ethan remained under hospital protection. She later showed Brooke the body-camera footage.

The room had no windows.
Shelves held behavioral reports, family court petitions, medication logs, and financial records connected to children placed at Cedar Ridge.
Some files described real medical conditions.
Others contained invented violence, false addiction claims, and forged parental signatures.
Ethan’s folder was already there.
So was Brooke’s.
Her file contained photographs taken through her bedroom window, copies of private messages, school disciplinary records, and a staged plan for her arrest.
The plan instructed Gary to provoke her into striking him while the kitchen camera recorded.
Once Brooke faced assault charges, she could be declared unsuitable to manage Ethan’s trust.
“He wanted me to hit him,” Brooke whispered.
“You didn’t,” Rachel said.
“I almost did.”
“But you didn’t.”
Inside another cabinet, police found bottles of the sedative detected in Ethan’s blood.
The prescription labels named children whose files were stored nearby.
Gary’s network had been drugging children to manufacture behavior that justified residential placement.
Cedar Ridge then charged trusts, insurance companies, and state programs for treatment.
The green paint on Gary’s belt came from the storage-room door.
He had entered shortly before attacking Ethan.
The most disturbing discovery waited inside a locked desk.
Luke Mercer’s old smartphone.
Its screen was shattered, but the memory card remained intact.
The final photograph showed Luke standing inside Room 317 holding one of the fraudulent placement files.
Gary appeared in the background.
The timestamp was twenty-three minutes before Luke’s fatal fall.
A voice recording began moments later.
Luke said:
“You’ve been paying families to abandon their own children.”
Gary answered:
“They’re getting treatment.”
“You’re creating the diagnosis.”
A woman spoke near the doorway.
Laura.
“Luke, please give him the file.”
Brooke stopped breathing.
Her mother had been inside the warehouse when her father died.
The official report claimed Laura was at home.
The recording continued with Ethan crying somewhere nearby.
Luke shouted for Laura to take him outside.
Then Gary said:
“You should have signed the trust amendment when I asked.”
A struggle began.
The audio ended with a metal crash.
