The headquarters lobby contained legal offices, counseling rooms, and photographs of adults reunited with original records.

Behind a records shelf, agents found an elevator requiring three authorization codes.

Nora’s.
All three women had claimed to oppose one another.
Together, their credentials still protected the same door.
Margaret cooperated after learning children remained inside.
Maren refused until Luke spoke with her through a recorded call.
“You once told me exposure would destroy families,” he said.
“It will.”
“Some relationships may change.”
“Children will lose parents.”
“Children already lost parents. You changed the documents.”
Maren looked away.
“Families are more than origin stories.”
“Yes.”
“Then why destroy the lives they know?”
“Because preserving a bond does not require preserving the lie around it.”
Maren surrendered her code.
Nora did not.
Agents opened her office safe and found the third authorization engraved into a silver picture frame containing a childhood photograph of Nora and Margaret.
The elevator descended.
Twenty-four children occupied classrooms arranged by memory type.
Visual witnesses drew events repeatedly.
Auditory witnesses listened to edited recordings.
Children with sensory differences were placed in sound-controlled rooms until they repeated approved descriptions.
The school claimed to preserve memories.
It was still teaching children which memories adults valued.
Nora waited inside the central classroom.
Beside her stood Margaret.
Margaret had been transported under federal guard to identify the facility, but a compromised officer released her at the basement entrance.
The two sisters faced each other for the first time in decades.
“You became Cedar Ridge,” Nora said.
Margaret looked around the classroom.
“So did you.”
“I preserved the children you misplaced.”
“You isolated them.”
“You called it protection when you did the same thing with Luke.”
Margaret did not deny it.
Maren entered behind police.
Three generations of one family stood beneath the green lights.
Each believed the next had corrupted an original good intention.
Each had continued using children to prove it.
Nora activated the building’s archive purge.
Deleting the school’s data would also erase current medical instructions for several children.
Dr. Reed ordered paper copies made before anyone touched the system.
Brooke remained beside Ethan at the command site. She did not bring him underground to authenticate anything.
Nora appeared through the school camera.
“The archive recognizes Child 317.”
“He is not coming,” Brooke said.
“Then some records disappear.”
“We are copying them manually.”
“You will miss encrypted files.”
“Then adults work harder.”
Nora looked at Ethan on the edge of the camera frame.
“You can save them with one key.”
Ethan covered the key beneath his shirt.
“No.”
One word.
No explanation.
No apology.
The purge timer reached three minutes.
Maren stepped toward Nora’s console.
“Our mother spent her life making me believe every child disappeared because she lacked control.”
Nora stared at her niece.
“Margaret lost me.”
“You were taken.”
“She stopped looking.”
Margaret answered quietly.
“No. I looked until looking became an excuse for everything else I did.”
Nora’s hand stopped above the purge control.
It was the first time Margaret had admitted that finding her sister could not justify the children harmed afterward.
Maren removed the archive drive.
Nora did not stop her.
The purge failed.
Police entered the classrooms.
Children were removed slowly, without declaring every relationship false or promising instant reunions. Each received independent representation.
Margaret, Maren, and Nora were arrested or detained according to their separate actions.
No final verdict was given.
The green school closed.
Inside its deepest room, Cole found the original camera used to record Luke at nine.
The film reel contained another child’s session immediately before his.
A four-year-old girl sat beneath a green light.
Her face was hidden by her hair.
The file label read:
MERCER OBSERVER—SESSION ZERO.
The date was fourteen years before Brooke’s birth.
