Chapter 5 - WHAT LAURA CALLED PROTECTION Laura requested to speak with Brooke without Gary present.

Brooke agreed only if Detective Cole remained behind the observation glass and the conversation was recorded.
Her mother entered wearing the same sweater she had worn during the kitchen attack.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Laura said:
“I never wanted Gary to hit Ethan.”
“You put the glass there.”
“He said he needed proof that Ethan was getting worse.”
“You watched him take off the belt.”
“I thought he would strike the cabinet.”
“You stood there while he hit him.”
Laura began crying.
Brooke felt nothing comforting in the tears.
“Tell me about Dad.”
Laura’s breathing became shallow.
Luke had discovered Cedar Ridge’s financial arrangement while reviewing safety invoices at Walker Contracting. Gary used company vehicles to transport medication and falsified records between the warehouse and the facility.
Luke copied the files.
He planned to report Gary.
“Why were you there?” Brooke asked.
“Gary called me. He said Luke was destroying the company and hundreds of jobs.”
“So you brought Ethan?”
“I had no one else to watch him.”
“You took a four-year-old into that argument.”
“I thought we were going to talk.”
Laura admitted begging Luke to surrender the documents. The company had already offered her money to remain silent about several irregularities.
“You took the money?”
“The mortgage was behind. Your father had stopped sleeping. He was obsessed.”
“He was trying to protect children.”
“I know that now.”
“You knew enough then.”
Laura lowered her eyes.
Luke refused to hand over the file. Gary blocked the stairway. The men struggled near the loading platform.
Laura claimed she turned away because Ethan screamed.
When she looked back, Luke had fallen.
“Did Gary push him?”
“I didn’t see.”
“Did you call 911?”
“Gary did.”
The warehouse record showed the emergency call came fourteen minutes after the fall.
“What happened during those fourteen minutes?”
Laura’s face collapsed.
Gary searched Luke’s pockets.
He found the main file but not the phone.
Laura stood beside her husband while he was still breathing.
Luke tried to say Brooke’s name.
“I wanted to help him,” she whispered.
“But?”
“Gary said moving him could make the injuries worse.”
“You waited fourteen minutes because Gary wanted the evidence.”
“Yes.”
Brooke pushed back from the table.
“You let him die.”
Laura reached toward her.
Brooke stood.
“Don’t touch me.”
Gary later threatened to accuse Laura of participating in Luke’s death if she exposed him. He told her the children would lose the settlement and home.
Then he became helpful.
He handled bills.
He drove Ethan to appointments.
He comforted Laura during panic attacks he had helped create.
By the time he proposed marriage, Laura believed staying close allowed her to control him.
Instead, he gained control of the family.
“That explains why you were afraid,” Brooke said. “It doesn’t explain why you helped him hurt us.”
Laura’s voice dropped.
“The trust was almost gone.”
Brooke stared.
Laura had borrowed against permitted distributions and used the money for Gary’s businesses. If Brooke became co-trustee at eighteen, she would see the missing funds.
Cedar Ridge’s fees would conceal the losses as medical expenses.
“You weren’t only protecting Gary,” Brooke said.
“No.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
Laura nodded.
“Yes.”
Detective Cole entered carrying a printed message.
Gary had contacted Laura’s phone from an encrypted number.
Tell Brooke I have the second Mercer file. If she wants Ethan safe, she comes to Room 317 tonight. Alone.
Brooke looked toward the corridor where Ethan sat drawing.
Gary could no longer reach him inside the hospital.
Unless someone there was helping him.

At that moment, a nurse entered Ethan’s room carrying transfer paperwork from Cedar Ridge.
👉 Gary’s forged placement order had reached Ethan even after police exposed the entire plan.
