Chapter 1

Sister Rips Out Her IV Before a Poison Confession Plays Across the Family Gala.

Vanessa held my hair while telling me to die quietly.

I lay across the marble staircase of the Vale family’s golden-anniversary gala, one hand braced against the polished step, the loose IV tubing hanging from my right wrist.

My silver-gray gown was twisted beneath me.

Blood from my split lip stained the back of my hand.

Below us, hundreds of guests stood beneath crystal chandeliers and white floral arches, frozen between shock and the instinct to keep pretending nothing ugly could happen in a room this expensive.

Vanessa leaned closer, gold sequins glittering as she smiled.

“The company is mine now. Go die somewhere quietly.”

She believed I was too weak to stand.

That was why she had waited until I left the private medical suite upstairs.

Why she had cornered me beside the staircase.

Why she had ripped the tubing loose when I tried to pass.

She thought the poison still inside my body had made me powerless.

I wiped the blood from my lip and looked beyond her shoulder toward the sound console near the ballroom floor.

Vanessa followed my eyes too late.

I pulled myself upright using the banister.

She reached for me again.

I twisted free and descended the final steps while the guests moved aside.

“You should have checked the sound system.”

Her smile began to disappear.

I reached the console and placed one trembling finger over a blue illuminated button.

Vanessa rushed down the staircase.

I pressed it.

The music died.

Then Vanessa’s recorded voice filled every speaker in the ballroom.

“I poisoned Father to unlock the will.”

My father, Arthur Vale, went white.

My mother covered her mouth.

Vanessa lunged toward the console, but the uniformed police officer beside the ballroom entrance caught her arm and pulled her back.

Arthur stepped forward.

“Vanessa… what did you do?”

I moved my finger toward a second illuminated control.

Vanessa stopped struggling.

Her eyes fixed on my hand.

“That was only the first recording.”

And for the first time that evening, my sister understood that I had not come to the gala to survive her performance.

I had come to end it.
