Chapter 7

I attended the gala against medical advice.

That phrase would later sound reckless.

At the time, staying in the hospital felt more dangerous.

Camille was gone.

Father’s voting authority was being transferred that night.

The confession was ready.

And Vanessa believed I was sedated upstairs.

I wore the silver-gray gown chosen months earlier for the family portrait.

A hospital cannula remained in my wrist beneath the beaded sleeve.

The IV tubing connected to a portable fluid bag concealed inside a small evening case.

I looked elegant from across the room.

Up close, I looked like someone who had survived badly.

The split in my lip came later.

The gala began with champagne and a string quartet.

Arthur stood beside Mother beneath a floral arch, pale but upright.

Vanessa remained near him constantly.

Every time someone asked Father a question, she answered first.

“She has become indispensable,” one trustee told me.

“That is one word for it.”

He laughed because he thought I was joking.

At nine fifteen, the tribute film played.

At nine thirty, Vanessa toasted our parents.

At nine forty, she announced that Father’s health required “temporary continuity of leadership.”

The board members nodded.

Documents appeared.

Pens were placed.

I moved toward the sound console.

Vanessa saw me.

Her expression froze.

Then she smiled for the guests.

“Elise. You should be resting.”

“I came for the announcement.”

“There is nothing here for you.”

“I disagree.”

She took my arm and guided me toward the staircase as though helping an ill sister.

The moment we reached the upper landing, her grip changed.

Hard.

Possessive.

“What did you bring?”

“Nothing you recognize.”

Her hand moved toward my evening case.

I pulled back.

The IV tubing caught against the banister.

Vanessa saw it.

Then understood I had come directly from the medical suite.

Her face twisted.

She yanked the line.

Pain shot through my wrist.

I stumbled across the marble step.

She grabbed my hair before I could rise.

And downstairs, the anniversary music continued.
