Chapter 8

The fall split my lip.
Not badly.
Enough for blood to appear.
Enough for the guests below to begin noticing.
Vanessa remained above me, convinced the room would interpret what it saw according to her version.
An unstable sister.
A medical collapse.
A jealous interruption.
She had spent years preparing the family to doubt me.
“The company is mine now,” she whispered. “Go die somewhere quietly.”
That was not the recorded confession.
That was new.
Another piece.
Another witness-filled threat.
I looked over the staircase.
Arthur had stepped away from the floral arch.
Mother gripped his arm.
The police officer stationed near the ballroom entrance had begun moving closer.
Vanessa followed my gaze.
“You think they will believe you?”
I wiped my lip.
“You should have checked the sound system.”
Her confidence cracked.
I pulled myself upright using the banister.
My wrist burned where the loose tubing dragged against my gown.
Vanessa reached for me again.
I turned sideways and slipped beyond her hand.
Every step downward hurt.
But the console was less than thirty feet away.
The guests parted.
Some raised phones.
Others lowered them when they saw the blood.
I hated all of them briefly.
Not because they watched.
Because so many had spent years watching our family and confusing wealth with stability.
The sound technician looked at me.
I gave the signal we had rehearsed.
He stepped away.
Vanessa descended behind me.
“Elise.”
I reached the console.
“Do not touch that.”
My finger hovered over the button.
Vanessa stopped several feet away.
For one second, she looked almost like the sister I remembered from childhood.
Blonde curls.
Frightened eyes.
A girl terrified Father might love someone else more.
Then the expression vanished.
“You will destroy this family.”
I pressed the button.
“No.”
May you like
“Truth will reveal what already did.”
