Chapter 3

Father’s illness never made sense.

One day he was flying to Boston for negotiations.

The next, he was unable to stand without assistance.

His hands trembled.

His speech slowed.

His concentration fractured in ways that terrified him more than physical weakness.

The physicians called it a complex toxic-metabolic condition.

Then medication interaction.

Then environmental exposure.

Each explanation changed before becoming official.

Vanessa controlled access to him.

She moved his private care into a Vale-funded medical suite inside the Manhattan hotel where our family maintained permanent residences.

She selected the nurses.

Reviewed the schedules.

Approved visitors.

When I objected, she told the board Father had become agitated around me.

“He thinks Elise is investigating him,” she said.

I was.

But not for the reasons she claimed.

I had found irregular payments connected to one of Vanessa’s shell charities.

The payments led to a private laboratory.

The laboratory specialized in toxicology screening.

Then the records disappeared.

My credentials were suspended the next morning.

Father signed the order.

At least, his signature appeared on it.

I requested a meeting.

Vanessa blocked it.

Mother tried to intervene.

Vanessa warned her that upsetting Father could worsen his condition.

For two weeks, I was kept away.

Then Father called me at 2:13 in the morning.

His voice was faint.

“Elise?”

“I’m here.”

“I don’t remember signing anything.”

My stomach tightened.

“What don’t you remember?”

“The amendment.”

“What amendment?”

He began to answer.

Then another voice entered the room.

Vanessa.

The call ended.

The next morning, a new estate document was filed with the family office.

It transferred temporary voting control to Vanessa if Father remained medically incapacitated.

That same afternoon, someone placed a glass of water beside me during a board mediation.

I drank half.

Within an hour, I could barely breathe.
