Chapter 5

The first recording was accidental.

Camille had activated the recorder during a medication dispute.

Vanessa entered the room later and took a call.

She believed I was unconscious.

At first, the conversation sounded financial.

Trust distributions.

Voting thresholds.

Emergency authority.

Then Vanessa said the sentence that changed everything.

“I poisoned Father to unlock the will.”

The person on the other end responded too quietly for the recorder to capture clearly.

Vanessa continued.

“He only needs to remain incompetent until the anniversary vote.”

My body went cold beneath the hospital blanket.

The golden-anniversary gala.

Fifty years since my parents founded the Vale Family Foundation.

Every board member, trustee, investor, and political ally would be present.

Vanessa intended to use the gala to announce herself as acting chair.

Father would appear briefly.

Weak.

Confused.

Publicly incapable.

The board would accept the transfer without resistance.

I asked Camille why she was helping me.

She looked toward the hallway.

“My brother worked at one of the clinics your sister closed after the merger.”

“That is not enough reason to risk your job.”

“No.”

She placed another memory card on the bed.

“But hearing someone discuss poisoning a patient is.”

We made copies.

Three physical.

Two encrypted.

One uploaded through a system Vanessa did not know existed.

The hotel’s audiovisual network.

My mother’s anniversary planner had given me backstage access months earlier because I was supposed to approve the family tribute video.

The sound console remained linked to my credentials.

Vanessa revoked my company access.

She never thought about the ballroom.

That was her weakness.

She understood power.

Not infrastructure.

I began collecting more.

Medication schedules.

Missing lab results.

Altered visitor logs.

Estate drafts.

Messages between Vanessa and a consultant who used no real name.

Then someone discovered Camille had helped me.

She disappeared from the medical rotation.

No explanation.

No forwarding contact.

That was when I stopped believing the gala could wait.
