Chapter 6

Mother came to see me the morning of the gala.
Margaret Vale entered my hospital room in a champagne gown beneath a winter coat, her face carefully made up, her hands shaking.
“You cannot attend tonight.”
“I have to.”
“You can barely stand.”
“Vanessa is announcing control of the company.”
Mother looked away.
That confirmed it.
“You knew?”
“I knew there would be an announcement.”
“Did you know Father never approved it?”
Her eyes filled.
“Elise.”
“Answer me.”
“I do not know what Arthur remembers anymore.”
“Because he is sick or because everyone keeps telling him he is?”
Mother sat down.
For the first time, she looked her age.
Not the polished wife who had smiled beside Father for five decades.
A frightened woman who had allowed wealth to turn her family into a collection of closed doors.
“I saw Vanessa change his medication once,” she whispered.
My breathing stopped.
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
“She said the doctor instructed her.”
“Which doctor?”
Mother shook her head.
“I never asked.”
Anger rose so quickly I became dizzy.
“You never asked?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of Vanessa?”
“Of what it would mean if I was right.”
That sentence explained our entire family.
No one feared the truth itself.
They feared the cost of believing it.
Mother reached for my hand.
“Do not confront her alone.”
“I won’t.”
“What are you planning?”
I looked toward the small black case holding the recordings.
“Something she cannot interrupt.”
Mother followed my gaze.
Her face changed.
“Elise, what is on that drive?”
“The reason Father is sick.”
She stood abruptly.
“No.”
“You need to hear it.”
“I cannot.”
“You already have.”
She covered her mouth.
Through the glass door, Vanessa appeared at the far end of the hall in her gold gown, walking toward us.
Mother whispered, “She cannot know I came here.”
Then she left through the service entrance.
I understood then that even my mother was gathering secrets.

And that Vanessa’s confession was probably not the worst one.
