PART 1
“The bride’s mother slapped the old beggar outside the wedding… then his old photo revealed the bride’s real father.”
The slap happened before the bride reached the aisle.
It cracked across the front entrance of the Harrington Grand Hotel, sharp enough to make the violinists stop playing.
Thomas Reed stumbled backward against the stone fountain.
His worn coat hung loose on his thin shoulders.
His gray beard trembled in the cold spring wind.
The guests near the flower arch turned and stared.
Vivian Harrington stood in front of him in a silver designer gown, diamonds at her throat, fury bright in her eyes.
“Stay away from my daughter’s wedding.”
Thomas touched his cheek.
He did not raise his hand.
He only looked past Vivian toward the glass doors, where the bride stood frozen in white lace.
Amelia Harrington had been moments away from walking into her own wedding ceremony.
Now she stood with her bouquet lowered, staring at the old man her mother had just slapped.
Thomas’s voice broke.
“I came to see my little girl.”
Vivian’s face went pale beneath her makeup.
“Security.”
The old man reached into his coat, shaking.
“I brought proof.”
Vivian lunged to stop him.
But the worn envelope fell from his hand.
A faded baby photo slipped out onto the marble step.
Beside it landed a tiny hospital bracelet, yellowed with age.
Amelia moved before anyone could stop her.
She ran down the steps in her wedding dress and picked up the photo.
At first, she only saw a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
Then she saw the tiny crescent birthmark near the baby’s left ear.
Her own birthmark.
Her fingers trembled.
She lifted the hospital bracelet.
The letters were faded, but still visible.
Baby Girl Reed.
Amelia looked at Thomas.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Why do you have my baby photo?”
Thomas’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I carried you out of that hospital.”
The courtyard went silent.
Vivian’s lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Amelia looked at her mother.
Then back at the old man.
The wedding guests, the groom, the bridesmaids, and the hotel staff all stood frozen as the secret Vivian had buried for twenty-eight years finally rose from the ground.
Thomas looked at Amelia like a man seeing daylight after a lifetime underground.
“I’m your father.”
Vivian staggered one step back.
May you like
And Amelia’s bouquet fell from her hands.
