PART 6

The wedding planner tried to move everyone inside.

No one listened.

Some scandals make people hungry.

This one made them unable to swallow.

Amelia stood outside the hotel in her white gown, holding twenty-eight years of copied letters against her chest.

Thomas stood a few feet away, still not daring to come closer without permission.

Vivian looked furious now.

Not ashamed.

Furious.

That hurt Amelia more.

Her mother had been exposed, and still she seemed angrier about losing control than about what she had stolen.

“You do not understand,” Vivian said.

Amelia looked at her.

“Then explain.”

Vivian’s voice shook.

“My father threatened to cut me off.”

Thomas said softly, “I told you we could work.”

Vivian snapped, “Work?”

“With what?”

“Your ambulance salary?”

“Your rented apartment?”

“You wanted me to throw away everything.”

Thomas’s face hardened for the first time.

“No.”

“I wanted you to stop treating money like oxygen.”

Vivian turned to Amelia.

“I chose security for you.”

Amelia’s tears fell.

“You chose comfort for yourself.”

The words landed with terrible accuracy.

Vivian stepped toward her.

“You had private schools.”

“You had travel.”

“You had a wedding like this.”

Thomas looked around at the flowers, the string lights, the hotel entrance, the expensive guests in silk and diamonds.

Then he looked at Amelia.

“And did you have the truth?”

Vivian’s mouth closed.

Amelia held up the hospital bracelet.

“This says Reed.”

Vivian said, “I changed your name because I was your mother.”

Thomas answered, “You changed it because I was poor.”

Vivian’s face reddened.

Nathan, who had been silent until then, spoke carefully.

“Mrs. Harrington, did you ever intend to tell Amelia?”

Vivian looked at him as though he had betrayed her by asking a reasonable question.

“She was happy.”

Amelia shook her head.

“No.”

“I was obedient.”

“There’s a difference.”

That sentence changed the air.

Because everyone there knew Vivian Harrington’s kind of happiness.

Perfect photos.

Perfect manners.

Perfect silence.

Amelia turned toward Thomas.

“Did you know I was getting married?”

He nodded.

“How?”

His eyes lowered.

“I saw the announcement in the paper.”

“I only came to see you once.”

“I wasn’t going to speak.”

He touched his bruised cheek.

“Until she did.”

Amelia looked at her mother.

The slap had not silenced the old beggar.
