PART 4

Amelia listened in her wedding dress while Thomas told the story.

The guests listened too.

No one moved toward the ballroom.

No one cared about the flowers anymore.

The truth had become the ceremony.

Vivian tried to interrupt three times.

Each time, Amelia looked at her and said, “Let him speak.”

The third time, Vivian stopped trying.

Thomas held the old hospital bracelet like it was sacred.

“I went back every day.”

His voice shook.

“For three weeks.”

“They told me Vivian had left town.”

“They told me the baby was sick.”

“Then they told me the baby had died.”

Amelia made a small sound.

Nathan reached for her hand.

This time, she let him.

Thomas looked at Vivian.

“I believed them for six months.”

Vivian’s face was rigid.

Thomas continued.

“Then I saw a photo in the society pages.”

“A Harrington charity gala.”

“Vivian was there.”

“And she had a baby in her arms.”

Amelia’s knees nearly gave out.

Nathan held her steady.

Thomas swallowed.

“I knew it was you.”

“The birthmark.”

“I knew.”

“So I went to the Harrington estate.”

Vivian whispered, “Don’t.”

Thomas’s eyes filled.

“Your mother came to the gate.”

“She told me if I loved you, I would stay away.”

“She said her family would make sure I never saw you.”

“She said if I fought, they would say I kidnapped you from the hospital during the fire.”

A horrified murmur moved through the crowd.

Vivian turned sharply.

“That is not how it happened.”

Thomas looked at her.

“Then say how it happened.”

The silence was worse than confession.

Amelia stared at her mother.

“You told him I died?”

Vivian’s mouth trembled.

“I was young.”

The words hit Amelia like a slap of her own.

Thomas’s face twisted.

“You were twenty-four.”

Vivian looked at him with sudden anger.

“And terrified.”

“Of what?” Amelia asked.

Vivian turned to her daughter.

“Of losing everything.”

Amelia’s eyes filled.

“So you made him lose me?”

Vivian looked away.

Thomas stepped back, as if even now he did not want to hurt Amelia more than truth required.

“I wrote letters.”

“Every birthday.”

“Every Christmas.”

“I left them at the old church office.”

“I don’t know if she got them.”

Amelia looked at Vivian.

Her mother did not answer.

That was answer enough.
