part 2

PART 2
Amelia had grown up believing her father died before she could remember his face.
That was the story Vivian told every birthday.
Every Father’s Day.
Every time Amelia asked why there were no pictures of him in the house.
“He was gone before you knew him,” Vivian always said.
Sometimes she added tears.
Sometimes she added silence.
Both worked.
As a child, Amelia imagined her father as a gentle ghost.
A man who would have loved her if life had been fair.
A man who was absent because death had taken him, not because anyone had chosen absence for him.
Vivian never gave details.
No grave visits.
No old letters.
No name spoken with warmth.
Only one sentence.
“He died when you were a baby.”
Amelia had accepted it because children believe the parent who stays.
Now, outside the wedding entrance, that belief cracked in her hands.
The faded hospital bracelet felt too light for the weight it carried.
Baby Girl Reed.
Not Harrington.
Reed.
Thomas looked at her with a pain so raw it frightened her.
Vivian stepped forward quickly.
“Amelia, give that to me.”
Amelia pulled the photo against her chest.
“No.”
Vivian’s eyes flashed.
“You don’t know what this man is.”
Thomas whispered, “Tell her.”
Vivian turned on him.
“You do not get to speak.”
The groom, Nathan, came down the steps slowly.
He placed one protective hand near Amelia’s back, but did not touch her without permission.
“Amelia?”
She did not look away from her mother.
“Who is he?”
Vivian’s mouth tightened.
“A sick old man.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
Vivian snapped, “A liar.”
Thomas reached into his coat again.
Security moved forward.
Amelia raised one hand.
“Stop.”
Everyone stopped.
Even Vivian.
Thomas removed a second item.
A small plastic sleeve holding an old photograph.
This one showed a much younger Thomas standing beside Vivian outside a hospital room.
Vivian was younger.
Exhausted.
Beautiful.
Holding a newborn baby.
Thomas stood beside her with one arm around both of them, smiling like the whole world had been placed in his hands.
Amelia stared.
The bride in white looked at the mother in silver and saw the lie split open.
“That’s you.”
Vivian’s voice sharpened.
“Old photos can be faked.”
Thomas looked at her.
“You took that picture.”
Vivian’s face changed.
Just enough.
Amelia saw it.

Her whole body went cold.
