PART 8

Thomas stepped back when Amelia walked toward him.

That broke her heart.

Even after everything, he was afraid to claim space near her.

Afraid of wanting too much.

Afraid she might regret reaching.

“Amelia,” he whispered.

“You don’t have to do anything for me.”

She looked at his bruised cheek.

The red mark from her mother’s hand still burned across his skin.

“You came to see your little girl.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Then look at me.”

He did.

Not at the gown.

Not at the diamonds.

Not at the Harrington name wrapped around her life.

At her.

His daughter.

Amelia held out the faded baby photo.

“Is this the first picture of me?”

Thomas nodded.

“I took it after they moved you to recovery.”

“Your mother was sleeping.”

“You had one fist near your face.”

“You looked angry.”

A laugh broke out of Amelia before the sob.

“I still do that.”

Thomas smiled through tears.

“I know.”

She frowned.

“How?”

“I watched interviews.”

“Charity photos.”

“Graduation announcements.”

“Anything public.”

He looked ashamed.

“I never wanted to frighten you.”

Amelia’s voice broke.

“You were alive the whole time.”

“Yes.”

“And I was right here.”

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

“Did you hate me for not finding you?”

Thomas looked horrified.

“No.”

“Never.”

“You were a child living inside someone else’s story.”

That sentence undid her.

Amelia dropped the letters and wrapped her arms around him.

The crowd disappeared.

The hotel disappeared.

The wedding arch disappeared.

There was only a bride in white holding an old man in a worn coat while twenty-eight lost years collapsed between them.

Thomas sobbed once.

Then held her carefully, like the newborn he had carried through smoke, like he was still afraid someone might take her if he held too tightly.

Vivian watched from the steps.

Her face was empty now.

No performance left.

No speech.

No command.

Only exposure.

Nathan bent and gathered the letters from the ground.

He tied them carefully with the string and held them against his chest.

When Amelia finally pulled back, her makeup was ruined.

She did not care.

She took Thomas’s hand.

Then turned toward the wedding entrance.

“Dad.”

Thomas’s body went still.

She said it again.
