PART 7
Vivian tried one final lie.
“He abandoned us.”
The sentence came out sharp, desperate, and familiar.
Amelia froze.
Thomas closed his eyes.
For one second, the old wound looked fresh again.
Vivian seized the moment.
“He can tell stories now.”
“He can cry in front of guests.”
“But he left.”
Thomas opened his eyes.
“No.”
Vivian pointed at him.
“You took money.”
The courtyard went silent.
Thomas stared at her.
“What money?”
Vivian’s voice trembled.
“My father paid you.”
“He told me you accepted.”
Thomas’s face changed.
Not with guilt.
With realization.
He laughed once.
It sounded like grief scraping bone.
“He told you that?”
Vivian looked uncertain now.
Only now.
Thomas reached into the envelope again and pulled out an old folded document.
“I kept this too.”
It was a check.
Void.
Uncashed.
Made out to Thomas Reed.
Amount.
One hundred thousand dollars.
Memo.
Settlement.
Thomas had written across the front in black ink.
I will not sell my daughter.
Amelia stared at it.
Vivian’s hand flew to her mouth.
Thomas’s voice shook.
“Your father mailed it after the restraining order.”
“I sent it back.”
“Then I kept a copy because I knew one day someone might say I took it.”
Vivian looked smaller.
For the first time all day, truly smaller.
“My father told me you accepted.”
Thomas nodded sadly.
“And you believed him because it was easier than choosing me.”
Vivian looked away.
Amelia felt something inside her break cleanly.
Not into pieces.
Out of a cage.
Her mother had not only lied to her.
She had believed lies that protected her from guilt.
Nathan stepped closer.
“Amelia, do you want to go inside?”
She looked at the hotel doors.
The aisle waited.
The guests waited.
The music waited.
A version of her life waited.
A version where she swallowed this pain, fixed her makeup, and smiled for pictures beside the woman who erased her father.
“No,” Amelia said.
Vivian’s head snapped up.
“What?”
Amelia looked at her mother.
“I’m not walking down the aisle until I know who is walking with me.”
Thomas stopped breathing.
Vivian whispered, “Amelia.”

But Amelia was already turning toward the old man in the worn coat.
